Instead of shooting upwards at this guy on his favorite perch I wanted to get a bit more on his level. So I set up an 8' stepladder directly across from him, partially hidden by our pergola. I left that up for a couple days and then climbed up, set the camera on the top step, covered myself with a Lenscoat lens hide and waited. Yes, my wife thinks I'm crazy

Not even a little bit crazy Gary... just stay hydrated under that thing and be careful on that ladder. Sounds like a great idea to me... oh, and the results? Stunning! Super good job!
Eric
Sounds like something I would try and receive the same feedback from the spousal unit! Thanks for sharing that technique.....may come in handy one day since I have all the required pieces.
As for the shots...well....my eyeballs are bleeding due to the razor sharp photos I just viewed. Wow!!! Incredible details, background, lighting, and very cooperative subject!
Thanks for sharing and showcasing what the standards are...which there's been some killer hummingbird postings lately....and this one does not disappoint!

Crazy ? Yay, crazy like a fox ! You can't argue with the results ! I always like to remind my wife... " I was smart enough to pick you " Just before planting a little peck on her cheek.
