p.1 #1 · How’s Sony 16-35mm f4 pz for landscape photography?

I know one of the main uses for the lens is vlogging. How’s it for landscape photography? F4 doesn’t matter for typical landscape photography but how about resolving power and tonal qualities?

I am going to follow this thread - but my assumption is the answer will be excellent. The 16-35/4 has gotten rave reviews, the only reason I haven't gravitated towards it is I don't like the PZ factor.

Also interested in this question. And maybe someone compared it with the Canon EF 16-35mm f / 4L IS, since I did not find a direct comparison anywhere.

There are really enough reviews online which show that the lens is indeed excellent. Image quality (sharpness, resolution) is absolutely on a level with the 16-35 GM. I, as a connoisseur of Contax-Zeiss lenses, cannot find a fault with the rendering and colors, either. Just a great lens.

I'm with hasenbein on this.

I'm not really a landscape photographer; I just take some random landscape images from time to time when stumbling into a great view.

I have the PZ16-35 since a year or so now. It has been my main lens sin buying it and it has been with me during trips in the south of Europe. I have never run inte a problem with colors or tonality. I can't say much about resolving power as I'm on a 24MP sensor only. There are however numerous tests/reviews published and for sure also real life samples posted and the lens pass all this with ease.

Younjulius: I have seen you posting in the earlier threads as well and you are still on the fence? I'm not loaded with money and have to consider what I spend them on. In this case I have no regrets and I think there are chances you'll be happy with the lens as well.

I see a couple of Landscape photographers who have shifted from 16-35 GM to 16-35 PZ, and they seem to be happy with the move. Peter Iverson using this lens on A7R5.

I found it great for landscapes and amazingly compact for what it delivers. Ultimately I sold it however as I don't often need wider than 20mm and find the 20-70mm lens to be more versatile (and similar IQ). I pair it with the CV15mm when I need a compact ultrawide and the Viltrox 16mm f1.8 when I need wide and fast. I've found the Viltrox to be sharper (and less distortion obviously) than the 16-35mm PZ however at landscape apertures there's probably not a lot in it.

Thank you for replying. Yes, I’m on the fence again after walking way earlier for 50gm. Since then, I started to take more landscape photos and I think this will be my main interest from now on.

I’m looking for a wide zoom lens that I can use with A7RV.

When I am out for landscape (i.e. most of the time), I now bring the combination of 16-35 PZ and Tamron 50-400. The whole range from 16-400 in such a small, light and versatile, at the same time high quality, package of only 2 lenses! Awesome!

I understand.
Well, I have the 35/1.4 GM, the 50/1.4 GM and the PZ16-35/4.
I run a quick test shooting several images of a piece of nature with a lot of different greens in it. Neglecting the light differences (natural light, sun and clouds) I'm pretty sure you can stop worrying about anything about tonality.
We also all know the lens is sharp.

There is some buzz around the new PZ 20-70 these days. For landscapes I wouldn't hesitate to buy the 16-35. From what I have seen it will serve you better (and no, I'm not selling mine). The 35 GM is up for sale though (locally only).

16-35/4 G PZ is very good/excellent for landscapes on A7R4A.One thing to be accustomed to is fully electronic and not mechanical zoom ring.

it's a brilliant lens. Mine is also up for sale on the BS board, only because I want to go wider.

I switched to this lens from the 16-35GM as the 16-35 G f4 PZ is much more compact for travel. I've been very impressed with the new G version optically. I'm not wild about the ergonomics (manual zoom and focusing ring being adjacent to each other), but overall switching to the smaller form-factor made sense for me. I also think the G version performs better than the GM on the longer end of the zoom range.

I'm pleased with the 16-35 PZ so far in landscape shooting. I love the light weight and the price. But I do wish it had a traditional mechanical zoom ring with focal length markings.

Same - I can't get used to non mechanical zoom. Took me a long time to accept focus by wire, though, so maybe i'm just old fashioned! I had Minolta's powerzoom system back in the day....zoom xi? I thought it was brilliant - but it never felt right. I realize the newer sony stuff is more refined, but i feel like it's a video feature and doesn't feel natural to me.

Hard to argue with the results, though. Looks like the glass in this is excellent!

Is the zooming completely electronic and has to be done with the rocker switch, or is it that you can zoom in and out with the zoom ring also?
