p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Wedding photographers adapt to couples who want instant images and less tradition

AP has an interesting article on the shift in priorities in wedding photography. I'm curious if pros here are seeing the same trends:

Nothing new and this trend started when compact digital cameras became commonplace with guests snaping shots throughout the wedding and often getting in the way of the photographer.

15 years ago I was printing special business cards for each wedding and it had a picture of the couple from their engagement session and the URL for where guests could order prints. I would batch process a subset and upload them as 8x10 size image files to a website that did the printing and order fulfillment.

The use of averages is very misleading for how much the bride is willing and able to pay. Many are hiring a DJ and video camera people and that reduces the amount available for the still photographers. One needs to be careful to not do a lot of work on products that they cannot charge the client adequately for the time invested.

Few people have a clue about how to pose a bride and groom or how to do the group shots or how to shoot in a dimly lit church or at an outdoor ceremony. Fewer still have the skill to produce a professional album for the B&G.

Those things you mention above had no interest to my two boys and a couple of nieces that got married the last 5 years or so. They don’t want the formal pictures and poses…that’s just old fashion by their standards. Not one single photo from the 4 weddings hangs on any walls in either their houses or the parents house. Not a single professional album was made. These things are not important for them.

They loved the spontaneous images taken by the guests with their phones or some cameras. People here would kick those images to the curb, but that is what drives todays young people.

One can buck the trend and look on, or one can change their approach and provide what the customer wants.

From what your boys want there is zero need to hire a professional photographer. If all they want is for guests to take snapshots with their smartphones and post them on Facebook that is their choice. People that hire a professional photographer want something more for themselves and for their parents.

I’m just saying it seems like that’s becoming the norm and formal photos from weddings are becoming obsolete. At least with the younger crowd.

That is true about formal photos. But I found that young couples want and love photos and they love having them in an album that chronologically tells the the story of their day with little to no formal pictures in them. I made very good money designing and printing wedding albums where the pages were made from photographic prints with 50-100 photos in the album. They were gorgeous books to look at.

Either they are not important or the quality of the photos is just not there. Maybe one has to do with the other. Could also be a price thing.

One thing I do know is my parents didn't put much thought into photos on their wedding day in 79'. Photos from that day were pretty bad but they didn't care at first. No photos from that day hang in their house either. But present day they'd kill from some quality photos from their wedding day.

Some things you will care about with age.
