p.1 #1 · Difference between Sigma 120-300 F2.8 lenses and FTZ?

I'm thinking about getting a Sigma 120-300 F2.8 to use on a Z9/Z8, mainly for football games.

What are the differences between the different generations of Sigma's 120-300 F2.8?

Do any of them not work with the Z-Mount Via FTZ adapter?

The sigma is an early revision lens. I have it and used for ultimate disc events. Complaints about it were that it was slow. But then people did not customize it for use which it is capable of. I referred to thpat elsewhere. It is not a light lens at 7+lbs . Look up a review in photography life. For a perspective or two. I have managed to adapt to it.

But aren't there a few Sigma 120-300 F2.8 versions? As I understand it, the most recent is the "Sports" line, and as I understand it, recently discontinued, though it is still shown on the Sigma website.

There were 2 versions the the second and last version is/was the Sport. I like it but things l like reverse zoom and focus vs Nikon tends to make it difficult for some to adapt to.

The most recent is the Sport and it goes back 8+years. I was using it on my D4s

I was discussing that lens with their rep in NJ. and he even referred to it as a past lens. Evidently it's demise me be more fiction than fact.

I like that lens a lot personally.

It is built solid and has taken a few hits along the way on the hood which is built like a piece of armor.

The latest firmware is from 2016

Now I'm trying to turn you off to this lens as I have one. being that the nearest equivalent is $10k and this does work if you are willing to put up with it's quirks.

What's the difference between the "Sport" and non-sport?

the non sport (earlier model) was a lighter duty housing and a bit slower. optics were identical.

I own a 120-300 2.8 OS Sport in both Canon and Nikon mounts. I used it a lot on my D5 and whereas focus wasn’t the fastest, sharpness was never an issue. I now own a Z9 and the 120-300 focuses much faster and, again, sharpness is not an issue. If you can find one, I don’t think you can go wrong with what you want to use it for. FWIW, my Canon version is just as good on both my R5 and R3.

From what I'm seeing, there's an even earlier version that has the physical aperture ring, no?

There are more than 2 versions of the lens. There was a non OS version with that ugly "paint" it peels easily I think there was a second non os version, an OS version with more of a flat paint which was the last one before they released the sports lens. The first two are less than desirable but the OS if I recall is similar optically to the sports version.

I can't answer if they work with the ftz adapter or not since I am a canon shooter (I'm only here just looking around)

The finish update was not considered a bona fide new version of the lens... Actually much of Sigma's lens lineup went through this (silent) change sometime in late 00s (I guess?)

There were indeed three versions of the 120-300: the original, the OS EX and the OS Sport. The latter two might be optically identical but at the very least the S version (which was the first in its category, and for quite a while, its only representative) adds the dock capability.
