p.2 #1 · Revisiting the 32mm Zeiss Touit Fuji x mount

Easily found with Google, all rather old now. I remember looking at them when I first bought my Xpro2, conclusion always seems to have been not worth the extra money over the Fuji lenses. Indeed several comments that there is no discernible Zeiss 'magic'.
Rumour has it they awere Fuji made, rather even than Cosina. Or maybe Tamron, who are part owned by Sony and who possibly made the Sony 'Zeiss' AF stuff.

If You like 40mm FL, then You should definitely take a closer look to Viltrox 27/1.2
This lens is a gem (I mean it)
It renders not so much clinical like every modern prime, it gives very nice and pleasing character into images.
Very sharp from f/1.2 corner to corner, and extremely sharp from f/2.8 and above
Very low CA, nice flare.. this is what I do call "multipersonal lens", wide open gives You vintage look, but stopped down gives You perfect images when it comes to technical IQ
Highly recommended

I have the Touit 32/1.8 but on my Sony mount. I’m an early adopter to it and I love the sharpness, colour and contrast. I’m ambivalent with the bokeh but if I wanted more background separation I’ll use the excellent Adobe lens blur filter. For me the biggest drawback is the so-so AF speed. However it improved after I sent it to Zeiss NYC a few years ago for the firmware upgrade.

I did a comparison years ago, though it is on a 16MP X-E2...a lot of the conclusions are still valid, though:

p.2 #5 · Revisiting the 32mm Zeiss Touit Fuji x mount

Early on in X system days, I used the Touit 12 and 50 but not the 32mm. It was not out of a desire for "Zeiss magic" but because they offered unique capabilities at the time. Today there are other X-mount lens options offering [email protected] and 1:1 macro. The physically featureless ergonomics of the Touit and Batis lenses never worked for me. Especially the 12 and 18mm lenses with their smoothly flared barrels which are absurdly slippery to handle.

None of the technical tests I've ever seen on the Touit 32mm were very impressive considering the cost. https://www.lenstip.com/386.4-Lens_review-Carl_Zeiss_Touit_32_mm_f_1.8_Image_resolution.html showed it was rather weak wide open which is disappointing given it's only f/1.8.

I'll add another vote for the new Viltrox 27mm f1.2 as a much better alternative in this focal range. Truly the only advantage I can see to the Zeiss is that it weighs so much less. But the Fuji 35mm f2 is smaller and lighter than the Touit 32 and performs better wide open.

These are excellent lenses! I've always wanted a 32mm. I have heard that earlier copies had worse auto focus but zeiss was updating the firmware on lenses with an improved algorithm. You could send your lens in for the upgrade and newer ones came with it pre-installed. I would be interested in a comparison with AF between an older lens without the firmware and a newer one. Does anyone know when the serial numbers start with the newer update as well?

Don't You guys think isn't it wired that You cannot update firmware on Zeiss lenses, directly through the camera?

I'm not aware of any third-party lenses that allow firmware updates through the camera body.

My understanding is that you can update Zeiss lenses through the body like one does for Fuji lenses

https://www.zeiss.com/consumer-products/int/service/download-center/photography/software/software-touit-x-mount.html

The initial firmware did not support phase detect autofocus, which would explain the slower AF speeds.

Not sure about the Fuji. However for the Sony mount I had to send mine in to Zeiss New York City for the firmware upgrade. I also have the Touit 12/2.8 but that didn't require any firmware upgrade.

This lens and the 12mm Touit X-Mount lenses have firmware updates you can download and update through the body (I have X-T5) no problem. My 32mm/1.8 came with latest firmware and functions well. Although I have not used it as much as my other lenses (I have too many 30ish mm lenses), I really do like the rendering of this lens and the 50mm macro that I also have as well. I got quite a deal for these two lenses on the used market (both like new). 12mm is too wide for me so I don't really have any interest in that one, but what examples I have seen with it...it looks nice as well.

I sold my 32 Touit due to lack of use. Re-reading this thread and seeing the pics have me second guessing my decision.

If you cannot update lens firmware through the camera, that usually means the lens maker has no licensing agreement with the camera maker. Zeiss, Tamron and Sigma X-mount lenses can be updated through the camera. Viltrox uses direct USB to update.

I'm not familiar with Tamron or Sigma X-mount lenses (nor am I likely to every buy one) - I have only seen Tamron and Sigma lenses that required a docking station for firmware updates, but if what you say is true, why do Zeiss lenses have to be sent back to Zeiss for firmware updates?

Tamron and Sigma docking stations are not required for firmware updates. They are for fine tuning front/back focus in DSLR era. Updating firmware is just an added bonus capability.

Zeiss Touit X-mount lenses are updated while attached to the camera. Only the E-mount Touit lenses have to be sent to Zeiss for updates. The Batis 40 E-mount can be updated through a Sony camera. I have no idea why only the Touit E-mounts have to be sent back to Zeiss.

I actually feel similar about the Fuji XF 35mm/1.4 that I sold off after acquiring the XF 33mm/1.4 LM WR. So much so that I will at some point in the relatively near future get another copy. Back when I got a used X-T2 body the XF 35/1.4 basically came with the camera for free so I didn't appreciate it much until after it was gone and I reviewed some of the lovely shots I got with it. So yes, even though I currently have 7 native X-mount lenses in the 30ish mm range, I will definitely get another XF 35/1.4.

I have no interest in ever selling my Zeiss 32mm/1.8 Touit however because it has its own unique character and rendering but I definitely need to take it out of the stable more often...perhaps I just may on an upcoming trip.

I guess for me I can never have enough APSc 30ish mm lenses which makes sense because when I was on full frame I had so many nifty fifties since it was my favorite focal length.

Lovely photos on the Zeiss. My main go getter is fuji's 35 1.4, but for a long time before picking it up I was between that lens and the Zeiss. There's definitely some really nice qualities in both

I recently acquired a Zeiss 32/1.8 lens and am thrilled with the images it produces. I've always been a fan of the Planar optical design for Canon ZE and Contax models, so I'm delighted to have such a compact and lightweight option dedicated to Fuji. I also own the XF 35/1.4 but have not used it much after trying the Touit.
