Manual focus lenses have an advantage over AF lenses when it comes to optical formulas. AF lenses have a weight limitation on movable mass. This is why some lenses, in order to achieve attractive OOF rendering, opt for noisier and slower but more powerful motors. Fujifilm does this for some X and GFX lenses. But manual focus lenses have no mass limit and can achieve results similar to large format which utilizes whole lens focusing. This is why I prefer manual focus for 85-135mm portrait lenses.
