p.4 #1 · The new Nikon Z8 vs the Sony A7RV and potential A9III

The idea that you would really have to choose based on capabilities of these cameras is kinda silly. The A1 and Z8 are interchangeable with a mild learning curve for 99.9999% of photographers.

For the Swallow shooters, maybe they need to stick with an a1. For everyone else, choose what one you like based on literally whatever.

Agree. And why I think the A1 is grossly overpriced. I shoot Sony but I both hope and think the Z8 will do well and push Sony. The A9 to A9II was a nothing burger. It’s been 6 years so don’t disappoint with the A9III. Just put everything into it like Nikon did with the Z8.

The A 1 being overpriced is also a suspect claim:

It has a one of a kind carbon fiber composite shutter capable of 1/400 sync speed.
It has an Ethernet port.
It has the best EVF available (feed quality shifting aside).
It’s capable of 30fps raw shooting @ 50mp.
It’s the lightest camera in its class by a fair margin.

That is clearly worth a premium, and up until the Z8 was announced today it seemed like $6500 might be a reasonable price.

The used market seems to have decided that it’s worth around $4600 or so based on FM sales.

While the $3999 is certainly an enticing price point for the specs the Z8 features, one will definitely be paying more for Z-mount lenses when compared to E-mount, plus the fact that they're heavier/bulkier.

The Z8 will make money, it looks like a great camera and it tugs at the heartstrings of those who owned - or lusted after - the D850 (I lusted after this). However, outside of the long primes - which do make me super jealous - the lens selection is worse with Nikon and the AF is still worse. I think this is a great camera for anyone wanting to shoot Nikon, and I hope it pushed Sony to put at least 33 MP in the A9 II, but I don't think it really pushes Sony in any meaningful way.

No, it’s not a suspect claim. It’s an opinion. The weight thing I do find important; the rest from nice but not necessary (30 FPS) to inconsequential. FOR ME. You do you as they say.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to insult you or overstate things. I think what you’re saying is you’d like if Sony released a lower end version of a 50mp stacked sensor camera like the a1, but cheaper, since you don’t appreciate the things that add cost to the A1.

Frankly, if I were a Nikon shooter, I'd wana upgrade from the Z9, too.

I do to some degree hope that this inspires Sony to reposition some of their cameras. The A9III needs to bring a lot to the table to counter this. The low res EVF is basically the only flaw I see here.

It takes me about 5-6h to deplete Z battery on A1 with "walkabout" usage and that's rated at 530/430. I'd be scared to find out what 340/330 means in practice ...

Honestly, Sony needs to put the a1 sensor in the a9iii to be competitive. If they want to sell a9iii at $4k. They can gimp the evf, lcd, video…

To each their own there really. I find that with the USB-C charging option I don't really worry about battery life anymore.
Most of our devices are USB-C so we just always pack a power bank. It's not like most people run around for hours without getting coffee at some point

It’s truly bizarre how some people react to the possibility of carrying a tiny extra battery in their pocket. The Z9 is the only camera I’ve never carried a second battery for, and that includes all of my Z battery cameras. It’s fine, you’ll live.

Yes, it’s true that Nikon lenses that don’t exist on Sony are in fact heavier 🙃

The Z8's combination of a class-leading fast read-out stacked sensor with a very advanced subject-based autofocus system is exactly the right combination for a camera body to superlatively handle almost any shooting situation. Given the fast read-out speed, I like the all-electronic shutter. It should be a wedding-shooters dream camera. It is very appealing to me (except that it is still too large) and raises the stakes for Sony's next high-end camera, whether an A9III or an A1II.

Does anyone know how good the Z8's image stabilization is?

I always carry a second battery in my pocket of my hiking pants. The one time I didn't was photographing Great Horned Owls a couple of weeks ago. I got lucky. I either forgot to turn off the camera or I put in a uncharged battery. I took my last photo and saw my battery was at 10%. But that was a stressful day. Another lesson learned.

It’s as good as the Z9 stabilization with the added benefit of not having to hold such a heavy body. Just do research on the Z9 to get your answer. Probably not as good as the A7R5, but as good if not better than the rest of Sony’s lineup.

Effective stops of stabilization, as always, depends on the lenses used and the person using them.

So, the main advantage the A7RV has over the Z8 is only a bit more Image stabilization, which is a useful difference. And the A7RV is a bit smaller and lighter and has a bit more resolution (though 47mpix seems like a sweet spot). However, the Z8's stacked sensor is a major advantage for the Z8, as long as it is combined with outstanding AF.

I am unlikely to ever again buy an expensive camera without a stacked sensor. A stacked sensor, superlative autofocus, and high-end image stabilization are my trifecta. Then comes resolution and size/weight. Then price. I don't ask for much.

It’s just part and parcel of the constant need to make entire mountain ranges out of molehills when comparing the differences among brands. Might the A1 have slightly better AF? Seems like it. Can anyone post a photo that would’ve been impossible to get with a Z9 or R3? No. Can anyone tell what photo was taken with what brand camera? Of course not.

Really. I'm not a Nikon shooter, but unless one shoots fast action, I don't really see a point of picking a Z8 over a Z7II. Why carry more bulk when you don't need the extra speed?
