Rob,

Have you had a chance to perform some AI servo testing with Kenzi running at the camera with the TC's to see how it performs?

How would you describe the sharpness of the following?

Bare - Razor sharp wide open?
1.4x - Razor sharp wide open?
2x. - Very sharp wide open?

How is the lens to hand hold for long periods of time?

Thanks

I have not done a lot with her running at me, not the best weather this weekend. I did do some. So far this compares to the 400mm in performance. I am really amazed how well it does being a zoom. You're spot on with sharpness and maybe even a bit better with the 2x at least for still shots I have taken. I do not think many will be posting negative reviews in terms of sharpness with and without extenders.

The lens is the lightest I have in terms of big whites so for me it is the one I can hold the longest. It is still heavy but compared to the 200-400mm it is night and day to handhold.

I think Canon did a wonderful job with this. If they do the same with the 200-500mm I bet many will like it also.

Thanks, sounds like a gem of a lens. When the weather clears up and if you have time treat Kenzie to a cardio session of her running back and forth into the frame. I'm pretty confident it will nail it, but curious to hear AF performance with extenders. Thanks again!

p.14 #7 · An RF 100-300 2.8 lens...

I got mine yesterday, nothing really going on this weekend so just many random test shots.

I had a 500 F4 IS then the 200-400 1.4x for around 8 years (sold it last year), I rented a few times the RF 400 2.8 and I have the RF 70-200 2.8 and 100-500.
Here my early observation especially compared to the 200-400:

The good:
- It is and feels much lighter, view that I did handhold the 200-400 most of the time this for me is very easy to handhold.
- Really sharp at 300 2.8 I would say that it seems sharper than the 200-400 at 400 F4, it is very close to the 400 2.8 this seems crazy but I need to do more tests.
- With the 1.4x I cannot really see a big difference in sharpness and AF speed. 140-420 is also a more useful range for me than 200-400.
- Smaller hood, for me much better.
- Better lens cap, I always hated the old ones.
- The zoom ring is very good, very light and not a long throw so when handholding it I can use my thumb to zoom. Way better than the 70-200 and 100-500 zoom ring. It seems also better (lighter to operate) than the one of the 200-400 if I recall correctly.

The bad:
- I wish it had the embedded 1.4x. If the rumored 1x-1.4x-2x will really materialize, then it may turn out even better solution, but as so far just a rumor I feel it is a miss.
- No filter adapter. For video and motorsport, I need NDs…. 112 NDs are expensive and harder to find and I could not find any VND that size….. Maybe an option are NDs that you can put in front of the sensor like the Kase ones.

I don’t have a 2x yet but seeing the pictures posted by Rob here it seems very very usable.

Overall, for my usage it seems a very versatile lens. In the next weeks I have a few events that I will cover so I can share more of my experience and pictures.

Canon can probably use some lighter/thinner materials in the 200-500 vs. 200-400, but if the 200-500 will be f/4 constant, the front element(s) will be larger in diameter and therefore heavier than those of the 200-400. Based on the 100-300's block diagram, the zoom design probably limits the ability to shift most of the large front elements towards the mount side of the design to bring the center of gravity closer to the camera, as was the case for the 400 & 600 v3 redesigns. 200-500 without an internal TC will probably be as long, or slightly longer than the 200-400. The 500/4 IS v2 is 383mm compared to the 200-400 at 366mm. For reference, the 300/2.8 v2 is 248mm vs. 323mm for the 100-300 (about 3" difference without taking into account the 1" added to the 300 for the EF-RF adapter) but only 300g heavier. Both are 128mm diameter, as is the 200-400. The 500/4 IS v2 is 146mm diameter (about 3/4" larger). Who knows, maybe Canon can get it to about 3kg. It would be slightly lighter than the 500/4 v2 and 1.5 lb less than the 200-400.

My guess is that it will be slightly heavier than the 500/4 v2 but a 200-500 range for people covering field sports and wildlife (non birds) is an amazing range. Even if is as heavy as the 200-400 1.4x it would still be impressive. No way it will be as light as the 100-300 as you say.

I got to use the 100-300 for my first graduation event. I handheld the lens and it is doable for one 90-minute high school ceremony but on days where there are two or three university commencements, I'll be on a monopod for sure. The lens will be a workhorse for event photographers everywhere.

What are you using on the “sub-100” side of a graduation event? Personally I bit the bullet for the RF28-70 and I really like having the RF85 1.2. That’s enough weight right there so I can’t imagine adding anything heavier than the RF70-200 2.8 on the longer side.

Not JimmyJames, but will comment.

I use the RF 28-70, RF 70-200/4 and 200-400 to cover the local university's convocations that take place on-stage in a concert hall (a professional venue for commercial stage productions). Lighting is good color quality at ISO 3200 1/500 @ f/4.

I use the 28-70 mostly for pre and post ceremony candids, portraits of VIPs in the chancellor's procession and overall views the events. I also use if for some angles when working from the wings of the stage. I decided on the 28-70 for events to eliminate frequent lens changes of fast primes while still getting that fast prime look and quality without having to carry multiple separate, relatively heavy lenses, even though it is a large and heavy lens itself. IMO this kind of work is a forte of the 28-70/2.

I like the 70-200/4 because it's so light and compact and I can get away with f/4 at this venue. It's pretty much permanently attached to a second body for random quick shots when the 28-70 is on the main camera. I still bring the 85/1.4L IS and 135/2 for occasional specific uses, but find I'm using them less, particularly the 135, to the point where I'm not carrying them and will instead bring them out for specific uses.

The 200-400 is on a monopod for covering on-stage activities when I'm working from the sides of the seating area, or in an empty row 2/3s of the way back (reserved for graduands in case of overflow). I like the 200-400 for this because I can be farther back and at the same level, or higher, than the podium. The seating area is a shallow bowl style typical of most theaters, so when at the front closest to the podium, which is located at stage right, you're actually about 4 feet below stage level and therefore very low, shooting up at the person, which provides limited compositional options. With 400mm, and 560 with the TC, I can include on-stage guests in compositions with the speaker at the podium, while the zoom lets me better cover a range of activities. Compared to other photographers usually covering these events with only a 70-200, I can get much tighter compositions and backgrounds that better show the context of the event. I'm also not moving around as much at the front near the podium and causing a visual distraction.

I've contemplated whether a 100-400 would be good enough. It probably would be, considering high ISO on current cameras is very good. Or the 100-500, though I feel like f/7.1 is pushing things farther than I'd like. But maybe I should try one.

The 100-300 in place of the 200-400 would probably work well for me, too, I think. I could use it bare or with 1.4x TC. For on-stage aspects it should also be able to replace the 70-200. And I could probably live without 560, or just use the 2x (but it would mean more things to carry, which I'm trying to reduce). Where I couldn't live without the 70-200 is general candid coverage in the concourse/mezzanine areas where the 100-300 would just be obnoxious, IMO. But here I could also just use an 85 and/or 135 to complement the 28-70.

There was a rumor of Canon developing an RF 70-300/2.0-4.0 lens, which IMO would be a much more interesting event lens than the 100-300 simply because it would be smaller and lighter (though still similar in size to a 70-200/2.8. IMO that aperture range would also be acceptable, though likely would still be slower than f/2.8 at 200mm.

I also still want Canon to make an RF 70-135/2L IS to complement the 28-70. Most events I do would be suitably covered up to 135mm.

Assuming I am shooting a handshake/diploma handoff, I have a 24-105mm f4 on an R5 as my primary with the 24-105mm STM on an RP as a backup. These have 600EX-RT flashes in them with a bracket.

A second R5 will be a 24-70mm f2.8 pre/post ceremony and I can drop on the 16mm f2.8 if I need wide shots or overview that need more than the 24 will deliver. I'll often change to the 70-200mm f2.8 for the ceremony (but that will change with the new 100-300mm f2.8).

On the R3, I put on big glass. It was the 400mm f4 DO II which is very light and compact. I still have that lens but when I got the 200-400 f4, I loaned it more than I used it. Now I will use the 100-300mm f2.8 on the R3. I did just get the new EL-5 to add to that combo too.

I routinely shoot with long glass at commencements to get tight shots of graduates and the stage party/speakers. I usually work with other photographers that typically don't have as much gear as I carry and they are lucky to have a 70-200. As a team, we are shooting to sell images and sometimes shooting PR for the university for a photo book too. The long glass allows me to get a lot of images of both grads and PR.

I also own the RF 100-400 (yes, I have GAS) and it is a surprisingly solid lens. If you have plenty of light, it is very useable and of course very light.

And as rscheffler mentioned: I can get much tighter compositions and backgrounds that better show the context of the event. I'm also not moving around as much at the front near the podium and causing a visual distraction.
