Soooo I finally got around to trying to fix this big gap between my vertical grip and my new body. I used this combo in LA for a big shoot and it worked fine but a big gap and felt loose. Really bugged me shooting. So out comes the Dremel and what I did is grind down the set screw but I also noticed two pin guides and I went ahead and ground them down a touch
So her is the image just everything connected before I did anything and you can see the gap between them

Im not repainting its my grip so I can deal with it but now after a little surgery it fits worlds better although there still is a slight gap but its tight and not wobbling. So I'll stop here before I do anything stupid to it. As long as its FEELS good then im happy be it Sony should fix this or not I'll leave that up to you guys. Im not waiting for Sony I need to eat.
But anyway looking at it finished you can see it got a lot better. I used a Dremel with a grinding pad

As with the CV 15 Petal removal which I was the first one to do it and we called it Choppy the Dremel is back out of retirement. Anything else, love this stuff.

Did it look like those pins were too long? I hadn't heard that before.

BTW I did not go crazy on grinding , I did a little tried it again three times before I finally said enough . Also I have have had great success with Sony Vertical grips with all my bodies along the way and even tried a few knock off grips. Biggest issue over the years was always failure to fire always. Only Sony has done it and I can't afford a miss that's just lost revenue as I sell this images from this big gig online in prints and downloads so something not there I get nothing for.
So if you decide to do it just take your time and try and see what is comfortable

Mike as I was setting it back in after the screw ( the first time)it was hanging up on that side of the pins. I hit the pins after the second time and it helped get that side down. I would recommend it but do the screw only first. Heck things could be different for others

I have read that the washer around that screw (on the grip) is too high as well. Does that seem to be the case for you?

Thanks for sharing this. I had read about this on a long thread on DPR back when the A7RV first came out.
I should be getting an RV in a couple weeks to evaluate. I have two vg-c4em grips so will see if there is any difference between the two and if both of them are misfit or not. I'll try to remember to report back my findings.

Quite the gap! My A7rV + Sony Grip combo looked more like your “after surgery” photo but even less light coming through. Clearly there are varying degrees of fit issues. Your post is a good example/helpful advice for those that buy the grip to check it carefully right out of the box so they can quickly return it for another new grip for a potential better fit.

I must say it does seem as though the only remaining gap is where the pins are and the center is nice and tight with no gaps. Perhaps a bit more off the pins would allow the sides to snug up better when tightened.

If it were me, at this point I would try some self adhesive foam you can get at a craft store or walmart in the craft isle. It is about 2mm thick and will compress as needed. The screw into the base will provide the compression, but the foam will provide a bit of friction between the whole surface of the camera and the grip. That would make it really SOLID, plus fill any remaining gap. Stick the foam to the grip.

I tend to doubt it but if they do than my bet is when a new body release comes along. Personally whatever it takes to get functionally then I’m okay with that. I don’t use it on every gig

they really needed to change the chassis/grip for the upcoming a1/a9, especially if they chose to not go with the bigger gripped body like the others, these high end bodies should be designed more like the FX series with proper attachment points, a little more utilitarian
