I had to put my hand in front of the lens to get it to hunt, but if you listen closely you can hear the AF motors whirring when changing focus, this is the same noise heard when trying to focus at different distances. Again, in comparison, my other S lenses when given the same situation are absolutely silent, there is no noise when they focus on something either near or far.
Mine sounds similar, maybe not quite as loud but hard to tell. I can hear it using the EVF, and it’s faint when using the rear screen holding the camera away from your body. On the positive side, locking on a subject is snappy so the motor noise is very brief.

Yes, AF is pretty snappy and can’t really hear it outside of my quiet office but did notice it so thought I’d ask, I’m guessing there’s probably a beefier AF motor in there to move those huge glass elements around which is why my other S lenses sound so quiet. It’s not a quiet environment video lens so not too concerned just wanted to make sure something wasn’t wrong. Sorry for hijacking the thread, I’ll try to post some shots soon.

Normal. I've seen three copies of this lens, including my own, and they all sound exactly the same. Yours sounds like mine.

I have gone through similar feelings with various forums, sadly it is the nature of the online world and an issue exacerbated by social media which promotes a type of deluded narcissism. I have left several forums due to some attitudes that seem to permeate the threads; however, a number of forums have an "ignore" or with FM it is called "Hide Me" which helps with specific offenders. I try to have more patience for some knowing that sometimes we (people in general) feel more at liberty to say things on an anonymous forum than we would if they were standing next to us. But I understand the tipping point can sometimes get the best of us. But the question is where do we go, there are not many forums with a user base that can generally help and I still feel that FM has more helpful users than negative ones even if some of the negative ones really get under our skin. Again, I appreciate your time and effort to help me in understanding my AF "noise" is perfectly normal and in line with the other 85 1.2's out there...
I use mine mostly for work (same with the 50 1.2) and don't post too much work on this forum. Being moved away from my street area for work reasons ain't helping. Great glass though. akul wrote:

Seems like this is a must have for 85mm lovers, I gotta admit that since I got the 58mm G and the Z6II with the FTZII adapter the 85/1.4D has been sitting on a shelf along with the D850 but that time I use the combo I go literally nuts, if only the D850 had an eye AF...

The old 85mm f/1.4D was one of my absolute favorite portrait lenses of all time--but I also feel like compactness was a feature that matters. The 85mm f/1.8S fills that spot in my bag at a similar size (less girthy for sure) and lighter weight.
I don't have any experience with it, but I bet the old 85mm f/1.4D would be fun on the D780. I am always keeping an eye out for a bargain basement priced 1.4D to use on my F100.
