I don't think it is from what I can see. The hair down by her collar, the hair on her forehead and the collar itself seem to be on a similar focal plane to the eyes and eyebrows. It's hard to make a judgement on the eyes as the camera is looking through the lenses of the glasses which would alter the focus to possibly the lens of the glasses itself? It's a difficult one as I am thinking the lenses of the glasses may affect the AF. I mean, the eyes look pretty much in focus, but we would need to pixel peep to see where the exact focus was.

There's nothing sharp in any of these photos at f/1.2.

If you compare it to the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2, this lens is just ... well piss poor. Even 3 .years later.

The sharpness isn't there at the focal point (which could be from the poor autofocus on the Z series rather than the lens). The rendering of the out of focus areas isn't smooth at all compared to the Canon. The images don't pop at all. They're lifeless.

Another clinical Chinese lens from Nikon.

What a shame.

As an owner of the 85mm f1.2 S, the sharpness wide open at f1.2 is nothing short of outstanding.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

Cheers,
Bernard

Ignore the wind up merchant above. This lens is tack sharp wide open and renders beautifully.

I picked up my copy today and my first impression was that without the hood, the lens actually does not look all that big and the weight is ok. Must be all that lifting 50/1.2S with Z9 regularly that make me think this

I took a few snapshots today just to see what it can do.

My first shot at my local Nikon store. 1/250, f1.2, iso280

https://morboi.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/NZ9_1793.jpg
Some cropping to get rid off some annoying stuffs on the edge of the picture on both sides.
I was focusing on the bicycle guy. A little girl running was a bonus. the good news is that with slow moving bicycle toward me, 85/1.2S on Z9 did not have any problem tracking the guy and 100% of the shots were all in focus. 1/1250, f1.2, iso 64.

1/125, iso 160, f1.2, low light eye/face detection is pretty reasonable but if the face is turned too far away, I did get a few shoulder shots.

Thanks Lance / really spontaneous - and nothing to write home for - but I do believe shows some of the potential of this lens

You are absolutely right, this lens has to be the least sharp lens I own. And the OOF rendering is just horrible, it's like someone has taken sandpaper to the real element, just so so bad.

And just to show how bad it really is, lets look at it at 100% where the focus point really should be...

OK so no idea what was going on with the lens yesterday, focus was all over the place. Today I have had zero issues with focus, and the only thing that changed was I took out the memory card to get photos off yesterday, and took the lens off the body and put it back on this morning. Not having any inconsistency issues at all today. In fact, I think this is about to replace the cream machine as my favourite lens ever.

Sarcasm is just sometimes not readily obvious when you put it in the written word. Don't mind Scott - he's from Texas.
