I guess I'm going to try to be more assertive with them and see how it plays out. Oh yeah btw if you order straight from Samyang they literally don't pack the box with any packaging. It's literally a box with the lens in it's box. So mine came with the outer box looking like it went toe to toe with a UFC champion but the lens box appears fine. Just surprised they didn't even put a single piece of packaging and put it in nearly the same sized box as the lens box.

In my (limited) experience new SY linear-stepper motors (85/1.4 AFII) are a bit quicker than Sigma's stepper-stepper (85/1.4 DN) but feel a bit less consistent and handle movement/action even worse (which was a surprise to me).

I think you can trade some accuracy/consistency to get more speed. That's obviously not the right thing to do.
I think that's what's wrong with the RF 85mm f/2.0 IS stm too. If a subject has a constant speed it works. But when there are changes in speed and direction it would have probably worked better if it was a tad slower. The Sigma DN is way better (and faster too).
That 85mm DN is - imo - the ideal lens to combine with a 35-135mm f/2.0-2.8 by the way.
35mm = f/2.0, 50mm = f/2.2, but 85mm is f/2.8 already. Longer than 85mm the focal length will create enough separation, but at 85mm f/2.8 is so so. Having f/1.4 at that point would be great.

I’m not sure the 35-150 would be the lens I’d take into Antelope Canyon. I’d definitely would want something wider than 35mm.

<- Here is a video of the creep while facing downward for anyone who wanted to see that. I'm not pressing on it as it goes back down as well. Just holding it so it doesn't drop or anything. Don't know how to record a video while walking around holding it and not having it be a jumbled mess.

If you are talking about the Samyang 35-150 to Antelope Canyon? You will be quickly frustrated. 35mm is for sure not wide enough. And 35 isn't wide enough for Horseshoe Bend. Maybe Lake Powell photos, what's left of it ,and the surrounding landscapes.

It was more for portraits of my family at said locations. Not necessarily for doing landscape shots and such. I've not choosen a lens for those. Any recommendations?

Samyang is apparently willing to do an exchange now that I got a little more forceful with them about it. So guess I'll be doing an exchange and hopefully the new one will not have issues.

Any particular reason why you wouldn't just take a piece of (black) electrical tape and tape it down the length of the (extended) barrel to increase friction? It's an incredibly easy fix that can be done with any thin tape in a matter of minutes to adjust friction to exactly how strong you want it depending on how much tape you use. If you only experience it in fx the first 2/3, you just tape it down the first 2/3 of the barrel. If you want more friction still, repeat on the other side. Putting a rubberband over the little gap below the zoom ring accomplishes the same over the entire zoom range.
Just seems like a lot of hassle, mailing lenses back and forth. I'm not being cynical/facetious, just a bit surprised, zoom creep has been an (easily fixed) issue for as long as I can think - sooner or later, on any zoom lens I've ever used. I have handled 3 different samyang 24-70mm (two I owned, one of a friend) that all had varying degrees of zoom creep, though no locking switch, and 1-2 pieces of tape always fixed it or adjusted it to just the right amount of friction for a precise, great feeling zoom

I mean.. it's literally a brand new lens that all reviews I've seen that speak about it say it's tight and should be no issue. Yet I have one that basically floats up and down. Take a few pictures and look at the screen to see how the composition and such turned out and your constantly adjusting back and forth. The Tamron certainly doesn't have that issue. Yeah, I could do a cheap fix but frankly, it's like buying a new car that is out of alignment or balance or something. I will say no one really replied to the youtube link I posted but do you consider this acceptable for a brand-new lens? When it's going down btw I'm not pressing at all. I'm simply letting it return without letting it "drop".(I also realize it's the worst possible situation to put the lens in for creep but as said earlier. You take a few pics go to check and your out again) ->

I'll also say if you order straight from Samyang at least mine they sent in a box nearly the exact size of the lens box with no stuffing or anything. The outer box was crushed/folded around the lens box all the way around so UPS definitely wasn't gentle with it to say the least. Can't believe Samyang would ship a $1400+ lens without any sort of packaging material around it.

Btw should also say if you order from their website and have a problem they will only respond it seems(for me at least) one time per day. Been having a conversation for 5 days now..

Do I see this right?

The lens can be bought, there are some users already using it, and STILL no review from one of the more trusted reviewers??

I don't really get the car analogy bc a lens that zoom creeps serves its function just fine and can probably be fixed in a minute or two whereas loose steering due to bad alignment could cause a life threatening accident and takes a lot more time to adjust just right.

It looks like my "loosest" 24-70 out of the three, which required a piece of tape on either side to adjust - what is odd to me is that it stops creeping this "hard" after 2/3. If you zoom normally is there a marked difference in handling in the last 1/3 as well or is that just when you let it droop? That might warrant an exchange, because even zooming matters in video.

Does the lens have foam / protection around it inside its box? If so, it shouldn't really matter what the box around the box is like. My worst case was amazon sending out a (warehouse deal) samyang lens inside a rather large (considering the lens) box - no padding at all. Just the lens and the little cloth pouch, not even the original box. Lens worked fine though.

Unless you mean people who get free review copies:
At least here in Europe and judging from B&H, most earliest orders in the west would have it shipped out around tuesday/wednesday and then the lens arriving friday (amazon germany is shipping on monday may 8th, some camera stores had it available on tuesday may 2nd from what I could see). So someone making a video about a lens with a 4x zoom range would have, at the absolute most, 72 hours to test, film footage, edit a video and upload it if they got it via the regular channels.

The point of the car example is you can fix it via a tire shop for "relatively cheap" compared to the car's price but you don't because that wouldn't make sense. You take it back to the dealer and have them fix it because it should of been right to begin with. Buying a $1400 lens and being happy that it's as bad as your worst 24-70 and you'd be satisfied with that just says your expectations have been met and that is fine frankly. For me it isn't and my expectations are I get a quality product that I paid for. I've talked to 5 people now with the same lens and they have creep only when literally shaking the thing and trying to get it to creep.

After seeing this I was quite excited.. nice rendering and great sharpness. I briefly thought about selling my 35 / 85mm Sigma DG DN combo... for the Samyang 35-150mm and 50mm 1.4 combo. The 35-150 as only lens is just way too heavy, it needs a lightweight prime companion. The 50mm fits the bill, but after researching it again... I got reminded how unreliable Samyang Autofocus can be. If they would fix this issue via firmware, this zoom would be so much more attractive for me.

Or buy a used Tamron for about the same price as Samyang and skip the Samyang lottery altogether. It is slightly lighter too.

I haven’t sold my GM lenses after getting 35-150, but they see little to no use now.

Im thinking of going this route.. Tamron just seems to have nailed it fully. On the Samyang you have to have their special adapters to do the firmware update. So yet another cost. Samyang has just left a bad taste in my mouth I guess.

Samyang support….. leaves much to be desired…. Creep issues, this is their second zoom, Tamron used to have creep issues many years ago, they opted to make lenses with tight tolerance to prevent, but they will start to creep after many years. Good thing there’sa lock, get used to using it and it becomes second nature.

Just keep the Samyang and settle into it, the lens isn’t for everyone, but it can be amazing (Tamron owner myself)
