Just got a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 and have 9 days if I want to return it.
Would like opinions on how good the sharpness of this copy is, ie would you be happy with this one??
Borrowed one of my wife's dolls for the shoot for some texture.
All pics were taken in available light after many inconsistensies trying to use flash. I used 400 ISO, Tripod with MLU on 2sec Timer. Shot in Large/Fine Jpeg, all parameters set to the middle. The crops are 100% from the original files saved as 10 in Photoshop (no other processing in PS).
I used autofocus on the end of the nose starting at 28mm. In my focus (AA Batteries on a 45 angle) tests the Tamron has a slight backfocus, the 50mm 1.8 has a very slight front focus and the 70-200 F4L has a slight backfocus on my 10D. The Canon lenses are included for comparision since they are normally considered good.
Wouldn't you also need to take into consideration the clarity and resolution of the monitor I'm viewing these pictures on? Have you printed out the samples and viewed them printed out. That would be your best bet.
Looks pretty good to me as well. You got yourself a great lens there..
but watch out for strong backlighting and contrast reduction in flare scenarios. Also above average barrel distortion is one of my gripes about this otherwise fine lens.

My 17-35 Tamron is great in the center of the photo but not so much on the outside.
I did some brick wall tests today, the Tamron is good on the edges at 75mm but gets progressively softer there as you pull it back towards 28mm.
At 28mm and f2.8 its very soft in the edges but still nice in the center. Stopping down helps and anything above f4 isn't bad.
My 50mm 1.8 mkI is also very soft on the edges at f1.8 but starts getting much better by 2.8. Is this pretty much normal for the Tamron 28-75 or should I consider sending it back for another one?
