Shot a year before the NPS closed it down because of vandalism. As of 2018 NPS has permanently closed access to this location.
I had hoped for some clear blue skies and had planned to shoot some milky way from inside, but as I travelled east...clouds started rolling in and by the time I got to Canyonlands, the skies turned dark, started my hike and literally 5 minutes later it started to snow. I sheltered in the area for a couple of hours to wait it out, but it just got colder and windier, I did not want to hike back out in the rain/snow later in the evening.
Composed some shots and left, with the snowfall getting heavier, the hike back out was not much fun and had to find couple of alternate areas. When I got back to the truck, NPS ranger was waiting and mentioned that he was getting ready to go look for me cuz they have some snow/sleet coming in later.
I didn't stick around and started my drive back to LA and around Kannarraville...it was blue skies again.
Even though you didn't get what you initially wanted, you still ended up with a great image. The highlights on the rocks are really nice in contrast to the deep shadows. The composition is exceptional. I'd be printing this and hanging it if it was mine.
Cheers,
Brent
I never understand why they would permanently close access. If no one can see this feature, of what value is it to preserve it? What are they preserving it for?

I do have a question about this spot though, and I've seen the same thing from others who have posted from this exact location: why does the horizon here look like it's tilted about 5-10 degrees to the right?

Dang man! I didn’t know that they permanently shut this down!
Your rendering here is wonderful and inspirational! Thank you for sharing it!
This place was so sacred to begin with. I think that it will probably make images from here much more valuable.
Now I’m gonna have to go search for those files and see if I got anything worthwhile. 😵💫
I second @adittam's observation - maybe the combination of allergies, antihistamines, and WA distortion, but the apparent unlevel horizon gives me a slight sensation of slipping toward the right front.

It is a sacred site for the native Americans who live/lived here. Us non native Americans don't allow our sacred sites, like cemetaries, churches, and other monuments to be vandalised, so the least we can do when we occupy native American lands is to protect their sacred sites.
