I was lucky enough to see him play with Jackson Brown at the Forum back in the early 80s. Nobody does a better version of Mercury Blues.
Great photo's.

As great as Jackson's shows were, they were made even better by Lindley. I saw him with Jackson at Irvine Meadows in '88. I think that Mercury Blues pretty much became David's signature song and you're right - no one did it better.
Such a great performer Peter. He caught my attention with 'Stay' as part of 'The Load Out'. Watched videos on the Tube. What an artist. Great photos, thanks for posting.

Peter, Peter, Peter!!! These are just amazing images of a lovely, lovely man. I, too caught him live during Brown's Running on Empty Tour, but was so damn lucky to actually get to meet and hang out with him later in life, when he was touring with percussionist Wally Ingram. The two of them made incredible music. We bought them a drink after a show and ended up chatting with them for 45 minutes, as I had been to Konya, Turkey, and to Rumi's tomb, and David was interested in that. When he came to our town to play at a blues bar I bought him supper while he was setting up, and again, had a decent chat. His death also caught me totally off guard. He wasn't a "friend," but it sure felt like losing one. Thanks for sharing these outstanding photos. If you can find them, the Twango Bango CDs are also fun to listen to. This is an iPhone picture of a crappy print of me with the two of them, just thought I'd share - hope you don't mind! RIP, sweet man.

Sharona - Of course I don't mind. I love your story and how it shows how accessible David was, and yes, Wally is incredible. Look up those El Rayo X videos from the early 80's. I've been watching a lot of those videos and it's just so heartbreaking. The music community on FB is taking this one especially hard. David was truly a once in a million type of player.
I went through the Lindley folder yesterday at the studio and picked out about a dozen to scan next week, so I'll be firing up the drum scanner. Yahoo.

Thank you Dan. As a fellow musician, are you familiar with his work? And as a bass player, are you hip to Jorge Calderone who Dave often played with? Jorge has also been a long time collaborator with Ry Cooder as well.

Yes I am familiar with his work Peter! My "job" kept me from allowing enough time to enrich myself with their talents. And not just in music!
The names I know Peter but life took us in the opposite directions when an opportunity may have presented itself.
You brought that back...My "third eye" now has an actual visual image to what was once a vision!
Thanks!
Dan
This escaped me last week, but not now.
Fabulous work Peter.
I was lucky to see him in Santa Fe years back. He made it feel like we were hanging out in his living room.
His likes will not pass this way again.

I only asked because I know how working musicians are sometimes isolated somewhat from the rest of the musical world while stuck in their own circles.

Ha. I WAS in his living room and he made me feel like I was right there. Thanks for the compliment. I'll be posting some more next week after I scan them. It was so funny going through the folder yesterday because there are good images that I just didn't see at all 35 years ago plus some instrument photos that maybe aren't my best but they show some of his weird collection, and that's weird in the best sense of the word.

You know, my boyfriend at the time had David sign his large El Rayo X poster - I wonder if you took that image!? His death is heartbreaking but now that I know Covid had a hand in it, I’m also angry. 😖

Sharona - No, not my image that I know of. I wish I had worked with him more often as he was a total kick. And it's also odd that literally no one is talking about his long Covid when it was prominently mentioned on the fund raising site that I first saw referenced on Facebook where I did donate a hundred dollars to his medical fund. And that he even had to do that is another topic where I see all too many very talented musicians in our circle here in southern Ca. who are grossly underinsured or simply non insured at all for health care.
Having pulled out of Facebook about a year ago, I had heard nothing until someone mentioned it to me. I don’t recall it being on the news - no big surprise- but it is sad about the medical bills. Good you supported it; I sure would have if I’d known.
Your photos just make me so melancholy all over again! He was truly a treasure.

I think I read about it on DailyKos of all places. I'm sure that Rolling Stone with do a big article but I got tired of them requiring me to have one subscription for the paper magazine and a separate one for their website. After close to fifty years of subscribing I guess they just decided to bleed it dry and I moved on.
I don't really have time this month but I'll try and get these new scans out but it might have to wait until April. We'll see.
