These have mostly been shot during the Covid shutdowns, when I didn't have many other options for wildlife shooting. So I had a lot of fun shooting these guys instead. I meant to post it here just haven't gotten around to do it before. I see some people on forums seem to be a bit negative toward squirrels and I guess the american grey squirrel isn't the best looking animal but I live in Europe where I personally find the eurasian red to be one of the most photogenic animals.
For the jumping shots I had some help from my father to build the jumping platform which is basically a wodden plate screwed directly on top a tripod with a central column which makes it hard for them to climb up. Then I just put up a stick close by which they can climb up and jump from. Then some nuts or sunflower seeds gets their attention, I guess spruce cones they usually eat are boring in the long run.
OMG, as a fellow squirrel lover (even the boring Grays around my house) I bow down to the master! These are incredible, both in art and cute - for sure your little guys with their funny ears take the cake. Thanks for the link to your Flikr album where we can enjoy larger versions. Hard to pick a favorite, but the sparkling rain drops is fantastic.
These are terrific shots! Great action shots and the squirrels are cute. YGMV.
Sorry, can't pick a favorite. Too many great shots.
Thanks for the description of how you managed to get them.
