p.1 #1 · Grey Screech Owl

Found this owl, I shot the first two with light and the second two at or after dark, as you can see by the size of their pupils.First time shooting owls after dark ( to get eyes wide open ) any suggestions welcomed. Thanks for looking. John

Fantastic images John. Really impressed you spotted the owl. It blends in so good with the tree. Thanks for sharing.

You certainly are persistent and have a great eye to find these Screech Owls buddy. The coloring and patterning to match the surroundings on the first two are amazing! Looks like #3 was well tucked in and sleepy Those are some big eyes on the last one, must have been last light and barely any of that but still looks good

Hi John,

The last is the clear winner for me. I'm wondering if you can come up with a different crop for the last to have it looking into white space rather than out of the frame. Also, experiment with white balance to warm the image up a bit. I love those wide open eyes.

Nicely done John. The last is a real winner. I'm curious what shutter spead and ISO you had to use.

Cheers,
Jason

Thanks Greg. They are hard to find, the grey ones are the hardest in my opinion. The red ones I find in fewer numbers, but their color makes them stand out more against the tree bark. Thanks for taking the time to view and comment on these.

Great shots John, the last one special. With owls it sure helps to have fast glass, like the 400 f 2.8

Thank you Karl. They do have great camouflage. The last one was in complete darkness. I can't wait to have another crack at him/her.

Thanks Jason. My first time trying to shoot after sundown. I made so many mistakes, just experimenting to see if I could come close to something usable. Driving home I keep second guessing myself, about things I should have done differently. I'm anxious to go back and try again.

R5 EF 500 F4 iso 3200 1/6 sec. I was still under exposed by more than a stop and was able to adjust in post. I went as low as 1250 at 1/8 on some but many had motion blur when he would turn his head. If you have any suggestions , I would be grateful.

Thank you Douglas. This was the best of 4 that I knew about, lower, no sticks covering the hole. I may try to post some of the other ones later.

Hi Dave. Thanks for the kind words. Believe me I was wishing I had a 400 2.8 or even a 600 f4.

John.
