p.1 #1 · LP-E19 performance in 1DX mkii

Hi Folks

The OEM LP-E19 battery pack is supposed to have stellar performance in the 1DXii/iii and R3, however the 1DXii bodies I've used seem to chew through the charge very quickly, sometimes only achieving +-600-700 shots. This would be with packs that are healthy and shooting in comfortable temperatures. Has anyone using the 1DX mkii also noticed this, or is just "normal" with this body? I've seen reports of 1DX mkiii users getting up to 3000 shots from a charge and even R3 users getting just over 2000, so I'm bemused as to why the 1DX mkii is different in this regard.

Thanks in advance.

The 1Dx II is not as efficient as the newer models. The processor is power hungry compared to the III but I used to get over 1,000 shots from it. Here’s this from Canon about the improvements with the 1Dx III:

Despite using the same LP-E19 Li-ion battery as its predecessor, the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III has a battery life 2.3 times longer than the older model. "There's a host of things that help here," explains Mike. "A new processor, new circuitry, completely new software in the camera – it's much more power efficient than the Mark II."

The Mark II eats battery power, always has.

Brilliant, thanks for all the info. Looks like I'll just have to suck it up and keep spare battery packs to hand when I'm out working.

Cheers. Looks like I just have to get myself another couple of LP-E19's and keep a spare with me at all times when working.

How do you typically use the 1DXII? I've had one since 2016 and the number of shots per battery charge is extremely dependent on how the camera is used. I've gotten less than 200 when I do a lot of live view shooting. I've gotten around 8000 on a single battery at the opposite extreme. In that case, I was shooting continuous high speed action with very little in-camera review and saving as jpeg files. Average 'normal' use, such as shooting hockey or football with some chimping, would be in the 2000 range, or more.

Thanks for the reply. Up to 8k images is pretty impressive and up to 2k would actually be more than satisfactory. Typically we shoot youth sports and because we sell prints onsite, it needs to be medium jpg. We review and cull/delete as we shoot so we only only present sell-able images, which obviously uses more battery. Up to now I've been using my 7Dii, which is perfect for good light ("reach" AF etc), but recently, due to shooting more gymnastics and swimming, I've decided to get a body more capable of handling high ISO. Added to my minor woes, my used 1DX ii didn't come with the OEM LC-E19 charger, but a third party Nikon charger, with a single adapter (the second adapter is AWOL) for the LP-E4N, which only charges the LP-E19 to about 90%.

I'll be using the 1DX ii to shoot Futsal this weekend so I'll see how I get on, but if its anything like the body I borrowed a few weeks ago, I'll be glad I have spare battery packs. cheers

Too bad you didn't get the OEM charger. They're ridiculously overpriced as standalone purchases. I suspect all or most third party chargers are based on charging the LPE4/4N and therefore undercharge the LPE19. You could try the Nitecore UCN4, but suspect it will be the same situation. I have one of their USB camera battery chargers for another brand and it has been reliable. With the UCN4, the batteries stand on end, which gets around the different shape of the grooves on the bottom of the LPE19 that keeps them from slotting into the older LPE4 charger.

I shoot the exact same way for youth sports (primarily ice hockey tournaments) and usually get way more than 700 shots out of a battery in a 1DXII.

Effective as of the beginning of December I've switched to the R6II. With a couple batteries in the grip I can easily do a few thousand images if I run it all the way down, but I generally switch those out at around 40-50%. FWIW, I find culling images in the EVF so much easier on my eyes than trying to do it from the rear display. I'm finding the R6II's first frame AF acquisition to be superior to DSLRs, including the 1DXII. But I prefer the ergonomics and button feel of the 1DX series over the R5/6/6II style bodies.

Yeah, I kind of regret selecting the one of several used 1DX ii bodies, that didn't come with the OEM charger. Other did, but it didn't trigger the warning signals it should have. I do have a contact at Canon who can get me a LC-E19 unit for a very good price, when they come back into stock. Its still a silly price, but less than half the RRP. If/when I upgrade the body, I'll sell the charger separately and recoup my outlay.
