p.1 #1 · Anyone else ending up with a lot of Sigma lenses?

Years ago when I was in grad school, and later starting my career with young kids, I would buy Sigma lenses as a budget option compared with native manufacturer glass. Not always, but mostly when it was a lens I thought I would not use that much. Back then, a Sigma/Tamron lens got you about 80% of a Canon equivalent (for example). Now, the kids are out of the house (or almost out), and business is good so budget is not much of a concern. When I am interested in a lens, I always read reviews and make my decision based on what I think is the best lens. Sometimes I buy a lens based sharpness, sometimes on size or build quality, or sometimes based on character. For example, Fred posted a review of the Sigma 45mm/2.8 DG DN and had some compelling examples of rendering from that lens. I bought the lens and have had good luck with it. I love the build quality and the look of images from it.
Looking at my collection today I noticed that all my long lenses are Sony, but everything less than ~ 100mm was Sigma, with the exception of the Zeiss Loxia 21mm. I had to laugh, because early on I told myself that someday I would not have to buy 3rd party glass. Now I don’t need to, but I’m still getting it anyway. Of course, many of the 3rd party manufactures have upped their game and that is the reason, but still it struck me as funny. Wonder if anyone else noticed this as well?

I have 2 Sigmas but am considering more…maybe the 105 macro and the 35 1.4. I’m not a pro and can’t justify GM lenses in functionality or cost so I usually go with alternatives like Sigma and Tamron.

Funny!…. Checking my lenses I find Sigma 20 1.4 - 40 1.4 and 105 1.4 … All 1.4 and all of them outstanding lenses!

The only Sony lens I have is the tiny 20mm pancake lens for APS-C, which I only bought because it's tiny. Sony lenses are generally very good but I prefer smaller lenses and until recently, Sony lenses were mostly either big or didn't offer the features I wanted (aperture ring). My current favorites are the Sigma I-series primes. I'm looking at Sony lenses more and more though. Eager to see how the rumored 50mm F/1.4 GM lens turns out.

I have a few...

Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art
Sigma 28mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art
Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art
Sigma 45mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary
Sigma 65mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary
Sigma 105mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro Art

The 14-24 is such an incredible value. Love the 28 and I got it dirt cheap new. The 40 was also dirt cheap, but a beast. The rest are great in their own right.

28-70/2.8, 35/2, 45/2.8, 65/2, 90/2.8, and 100-400 DN Contemporaries here. I've been more or less impressed by them. The 90/2.8 is the most recent acquisition. I am not fond of the alloy bodies of the primes, but they seem very well made. I don't like the backwards from native zoom rotation of the zooms, but I've adapted Canon zooms that are the same. I have some concern about their lack of sealing.

I still have the old 12-24, 20/1.8, and 50/1.4 EX series lying around too. Those have similar image quality priorities, but were not as well made.

I have had a few of their even older lenses like the 24mm F2.8 Super Wide II and the 28mm F1.8 High Speed. Both were pretty good. The later was better than the Canon and Minoltas.

Yeah, I think in general current 3rd party options for e-mount are amazing.
Sigma has both some unique offerings (20/1.4, 35/1.2, 45/2.8, 65/2, ...) and some amazing price/performance choices (14-24, 24-70, 100-400, ...).

I'd love to see an upgrade to the 105mm f1.4, a faster set of focus motors and this lens would be perfect. I doubt we'll ever see it though, unless Sony comes out with one and Sigma responds.

I have one apsc lens from Sigma. I am considering buying the 14-24mm. I want an ultrawide zoom for cityscapes and interior architecture (not for work, just for fun), and I don't want to pay up for the 12-24 GM

I shoot with several different kits and my main Sony kit is mostly built on the new GM based lenses. Prior to those I used Zeiss Loxia and Batis so I’ve used 3rd party lenses with Sony before. These days for my second kit I’m using Sigma’s I series DG DN Contemporary lenses to get two small zooms, 16-28/2.8 and 28-70/2.8 and then their 24/2, 35/2, 65/2 and 90/2.8 primes. I did buy the 45/2.8 but will sell that. I like their build and the work really well IMHO. Did buy them all used in mint condition so maybe my standard is lower here than others but I’m happy with them. Provide a nice lower cost option.

Only Sigma lens for me is the 100-400. Most my lenses are either Batis or Zeiss ze.

I have 5 so far (14-24DN, 24-35, 28, 85DN, 135) and am looking at least 3-4 more.

Certainly the 40mm and the 105mm Art lenses.

I enjoyed all my Sigma's .. build quality, aperture ring, easy to MF, small & light. only negative for me was the metal hood design.
Owned ....
16-28/2.8
24/3.5
28-70/2.8
35/2
45/2.8
65/2
90/2.8

I sold them all because I got worried the only weather-sealing is the lens gasket and I am often in snow, rain, dust, etc...
probably unnecessarily concerned since I never had an issue with dust or moisture.

Currently all my lenses are Sony.

The "DN" Art lenses are incredible. In SLR days I used to consider the Sigma and Tamron lenses a significant step down from first party glass. I don't see the current Sigma lenses as being less than anything (except price). I'm using the E-mount 14-24 and 105 macro. The Sony 12-24 GM gets you a little wider but I could not see a 2x advantage for the 2x price. I simply prefer the Sigma macro to the Sony 90.

As young people say, the 85mm f/1.4 and the 24-70 f/2.8 "slap". They're great optical performers for the price and hold their own in most situations. The "DN" line has been a great balance of size for the native mount, and compared to cheap feeling Tamron lenses, they're a great choice on a budget.

I also have/had several DG DN lenses.
The one that continues to impress me the most is the 14-24, an amazing lens. Not only because of the sharpness, but also how little field curvature it has. Makes it very enjoyable to predict your depth of field across the frame.

I don't have a lot of Sigma lenses, but they are consistently the benchmark for me when other products come out. GM lenses are usually just too expensive in my view and the DG DN Art line makes the right compromises for me and provide good value propositions.
Generally speaking I feel like Sigma understands their customers needs and tries to cater to them. Sony seems to mostly want to cater to professionals and vloggers/film makers. Sigma mostly honors people wanting to have a (high end) hobby.

I used to have the 14-24 f2.8, 24-70 F2.8, 35 f2, now only the 85 f1.4, which has been sitting in the closet. The 24-70 served me well, it's replaced by the Sony 24-70 GM II. I don't really have a replacement for the 14-24, I don't really consider my Sony PZ 16-35 is replacement for that lens. If Sigma makes a 14-30 f4 that takes screw-in filter, I will jump back in.

Before switching to Sony last fall I was using all Sigma EF lenses. 20,35 and 85 1.4 Art and the trio of 2.8 zooms. Loved all of them for different reasons.

Now on Sony I moved to the smaller / slower primes because I need a more compact kit, but I do miss those lenses some days.

I love Sigma lenses, i should get more.

Sigma 35mm DG DN F1.2 is absolutely amazing, best prime i've ever used. Will not change it for the world. And price is epic for how good it is, 1200€ new i payed.

Sigma 14-24mm and 24-70mm dg dn are also amazing. Half the price (or less) and i had both these and the best Sony versions.

I'll definitely buy more, Sigma 45mm interest me for sure (especially at 400€ used), 50mm F1.4, 105mm F1.4 sure does, 85mm does, 60-600mm again does, any 70-200mm they come up with, 20mm is high on my list for astro. Some of the I series too.

Sigma 50mm F1.2 certainly would have my eyes too, so we will see
