If you want a somewhat smaller lens, then there is always that option. I doubt Sigma is trying to compete with Samyang, however, with their new DG DN. Instead, I think they are probably aiming to compete with Sony's own offerings.

50 AF II is up there with the GM and ZA. It has more CA and is not as sharp throughout the whole frame as the GM, but it's at least as sharp in the center area and has nice bokeh as well. There was even a user here who had both (GM and SY) and said they are pretty close in day-to-day usage AFAIR. I think its biggest downside is AF, as *some* (so might be copy dependent) reviewers complained about its accuracy.
Anyways, my point is that there is already a great and relatively compact 50/1.4 for e-mount (if you can live with its downsides, as with every lens). So, Sigma has its work cut, especially if 50/1.4 G(M) rumours are true.

I think the Samyang is an excellent lens. My biggest beef with all SY lenses is that I don't like their build or lack of an aperture ring...for a bit more money I'd rather have something like the Art series.
But, to your point, the Samyang isn't that long, it's just over 400 grams and it tests out very sharp. The samples I have seen demonstrate pretty nice rendering too. I'm not sure I'm in the market for a fast 50, but if I were, I'd have the SY on my shortlist.
I wonder if the rumoured 50/1.4 GM will cut the difference in size/weight between the SY and the Sigma?

Are you trying to pick a fight? I was agreeing with you, the Samyang is cheaper and smaller. I don't know anything about its performance, but Sigma clearly isn't trying to compete with them when they build a larger and more expensive lens. That is all I am saying. It seems Sigma is competing with the Sony offerings based on the lens they built and not the Samyang offering. I can't see how any of that is confusing.

True, true - Samyangs feel at least a bit plasticky-rubbery. I have not handled their latest offerings, but they don't really instill confidence compared to premium / all-metal lenses.
I personally hope the Sony 50/1.4 rumour is false, as I'd prefer a new focal length instead ...

Hmm. So if the GM was already on the table for you budget-wise, that's still the right choice.
I was hoping it would be meaningfully lighter or smaller. 3.8 ounces lighter and basically the same physical size as the GM. But, based off how stellar the 85mm DG DN is, this will likely be a winner for the money.
So many 50's!! If it's going to follow the 85 dg dn optics formula with newer af motors it should be pretty popular depending on where the 1.4 gm will place price wise. I've actually been pretty surprised how handy a 50mm can be for portraits with babies/young kids since it's easier to frame esp with the 1.2 GM
