Man I am still hoping they remake the 40 1.4 into a lighter package but i guess it won't happen. I just so loved that lens. I guess ill have to get the adapted version eventually. Loved its rendering, sharpness and resistance to flare.
This 50 1.4 looks promising. If it will have similar optics as the beloved 85 1.4 dg dn that i so love i am sure it will be great.
The timing of this 'rumour' and the 50GM 'rumour' is interesting - presumably either the Sigma PR department got wind of Sony about to announce a rumour so they pre-empted it with their own, or Sony reacted to the Sigma rumour with one of their own to protect future sales.
Either way, Sigma is likely going to get flattened by the GM again , just like they did with the 35/1.4 DG DN. I feel sorry for them, as the 35 was otherwise an excellent lens that would have sold great if it wasn't for the simultaneous release of the GM. Less sympathy this time as they had a long time to fill this e-mount hole (and a hole in their own lineup) and was too late to the party.
As an amateur shooter, if this is half the price of the upcoming GM, like the 35 was in the UK, I'll for sure get this one. I've got the 35GM now and it's a beautiful lens, but only a tiny bit better than the 35/1.4 DG DN for twice the price.
The Sigma will be much cheaper than the upcoming GM so it will have its fans. Ultimately it’s about choice and these 2 certainly add to the already numerous choices in the focal length on emount. Personally I’m sticking to my 50mm f1.2 GM but welcome new options for those who need/want them.

For the 35 the GM was already in my hands before any rumor of the 35/1.4 DN. Upon release of the Sigma the optics of the DN did not test as well as the GM and at least for me I would suspect Sigma would have inferior focus as well. So at that point does it make sense to sell the GM at a loss to pick up a cheaper Sigma that underperforms. I chose to hold the GM.
Now shifting to 50mm. I don't have a fast 50mm, the /1.2 GM is interesting, but larger and more expensive than ideal. I'm in the market for a fast 50, but not a desperate buyer. Knowing both a Sigma 1.4 and Sony GM are coming is good. I will wait for comparisons between them before pulling the trigger on either one of the 1.4 or the larger 1.2. The prospect of a new Sigma linear motor would address some, but not all of my focus concerns.
The specs according to the link on the first post in this thread for the new 50 f/1.4 DG DN Art will be:
78.2mm in diameter; 109.5mm long with a weight of 670g - The picture seems consistent with that.
The Sony/Zeiss 50 f/1.4 ZA is 83.5mm in diameter; 108mm long and weighs 780g
The Sony 50 f/1.2 GM is 87mm in diameter; 108mm long and weighs 778g
Incidentally the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art is 82.8mm in diameter, 96.1mm long, and weighs 625g, so it is fatter a bit shorter and only weighs 45g less than this new 50 f/1.4.
So this new 50 f/1.4 from Sigma has a bit smaller diameter, but is not shorter and weighs just over 100g less than the previous fast 50mm lenses for Sony E mount. That size difference may or may not matter to you. Personally, it doesn't matter much to me. It will be the performance of the lens that determines whether I buy it or not. The rumored price is nice but not so cheap that I will buy it just for the price.
Since the 50mm 1.4 DG DN seems rather heavy for a 50mm 1.4, I suspect Sigma has gone all out optically with this new lens. Will be probably atleast as good as the 85mm, fingers crossed.

There is quite a lot of pincushion distortion. (Yes there are profiles for popular commercial bits of software. There isn't yet for lensfun that most open source options use. It's not a complaint, had I purchased the 85 dn I would have tried to contribute. It's just noting that such distortion doesn't rhyme with "all out optically" to me though yes, you did write "at least" : ) )
The 35/1,4 dn on the other hand reportedly has rather little and not so complex barrel distortion. The latter is also similar in dimensions and weight to this new 50mm Sigma as mentioned prior in this thread. I expect this to be similar to whatever Sony 50 1,4 lens might be coming up, optically, not pricewise and not heftwise. A bit like the 35/1,4 vs each other.
Yes, distortion is massive on 85DN, luckily corrected pictures still retain sharpness.
I didn't know about lensfun, I'll try to take some calibration pictures and submit them over the weekend, if I don't forget about it by then .
