p.1 #1 · Red-breasted merganser at 80 MPH (129 KPH)
The red-breasted merganser is one of the fastest ducks making flight photos quite challenging. It has been many years since I got a nice close image as one flew past and now with improved auto focus and a very fast burst rate I was able to get a few at the closest point as it passed a few feet above my head and to the east illuminated by the late afternoon sun. I had picked it up early as a little dot in the distance and watched it grow larger in my viewfinder. All the action was in much less than a second as I did a very fast cross step around my tripod to pan with the blazing fast duck. The photos were taken from the spot we call the runway at the West Pond of Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge here in New York City.
