p.1 #1 · 39mm uv filter - similar to Zeiss uv

Hi,

I am looking for a 39mm uv filter. I like to use Zeiss T* UV filters as they have a cut off around 410 but they don’t make them in 39mm size.

I believe there is another brand that has a similar uv cut off point but I can’t remember the brand / model. I think it was Japanese.

Can anyone help?

Thank you.

No matter which brand you look at - all manufacturers know that people looking for 39 mm filters will use them on Leica lenses. Therefore they are all expensive (for the size diameter nevertheless).

410nm cutoff? Tiffen Haze 2A and the B+W 420 filters should do what you're after.

Thanks. I am no expert - I am just following advise and information I have learnt elsewhere.

But the graph from zeiss and the graph from b+w look very different. I believe the b+w filters have a cut off that is practically under 400 - they do start to block at around 410 but it is very gradual until well under 400. The Zeiss is much straighter down from 410.

The Japanese brand you're thinking of might be Kenko with their Zeta L41 UV line of filters. Unfortunately, they don't have sizes as small as 39mm either.

I was in the same situation as you and ended up going with Urth and their Plus+ line. I emailed them about light transmission, and they sent me a spectrum chart showing the Plus+ UV filters cut off just above 400nm. They're not quite the same as Zeiss, but very close.

You beat me to it! I use both Zeiss and Kenko UV filters, and they are both great. In my search for 410nm hard cut UV filters, those are the 2 that I've found. It's a shame that neither makes one that small.

Chiaro make good UV filters.

http://www.chiarofilters.com/labs/data

I usually use these especially for replacing the lenses in my ancient Leica UV filters or any of my other filters.

Their pdf data sheet can be found HERE

Here is the transmission graph showing the bandpass for the b+W 420 filter I mentioned.

Unfortunately it looks like they're discontinued.

If you're super keen and can live with a step up ring you could get a 39-48mm step up and an Astronomik L3 filter.

Thanks a lot for all the tips. I keep saying it but fm forums are so useful and I’m really grateful.

I think I will try one of the Urth pro filters. I think they are made in china but at least they talk about eco issues…5 trees per filter…

Those chiaro filters look very nice. I love to see companies trying hard. I would have bought one but can’t find them locally.

Step rings and a larger filter won’t work due to my insane ocd and that the hood won’t fit.
It’s odd that some companies don’t make 39mm filters - so many lenses in the Leica world are 39mm…
