Has anyone found a L-bracket that is a good fit on the A7RV?

p.1 #2 · L-bracket for A7RV?

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1779958/25#16099948

General understanding is that most (if not all) a7R IV brackets should fit. I will hopefully be attaching my RRS to my a7R V when it is delivered later today.

I sold my old RIV L-bracket with the RIV. Something I saw or read somewhere led me to believe that it might not fit exactly on the RV (that the RV was closer to the A7IV and A7sIII bodies than the RIV).

However, I recently received the Atoll mount from kickstarter (see link below), and it fits my new RV exactly the same as it previously fit the RIV, so good news there. Only issue with it is it's a tight squeeze to get your finger onto the lens release button, but no worse than it was on the RIV.

I just tested my RRS ultralight L-Bracket from my A7RIVa on my A7RV (which just arrived) and it fits perfectly. I have almost full movement on the screen (totally full movement if I pull the screen out a tiny bit from the body) and everything is tight.

The only issue is that the doors to ports are hard to reach. I just loosen and pull the bracket out a bit and reach them that way. For me, this would be a rare situation anyway (hooking up a remote cable release, or powering the camera with a battery bank while doing astro are the only cases I can think of where I'd need to access the ports while the L-Bracket was attached).

When a nice Sony rep was at my local store, Pro Photo Supply, in Portland, OR a bit ago. I was able to try my excellent Kirk bracket from my A7RIV on his A7RV.

It fit perfectly. The Kirk has full access to the battery and it has a securely attached Allen wrench. It was less expensive than the RRS one as well. Highly recommended.

https://rogeti.com/products/l-plate-for-sony-a1-a7s3

Works fine (I took it off my A1 to test) with full access to ports and screen articulation.

Rogeti L brackets are awesome! I had the old version of the Rogeti for A7R IV which unfortunately doesn't work on the A7R 5. They've since redesigned it to be compatible across more models. I just ordered the new one which secondclaw linked to because it's such a great bracket. Most notably, the leveling vials. I wish Sony would let you show the electronic level and histogram on the same screen. Fuji does it right. Anyway, highly recommended!

My favorite L-brackets are the grip extension style ones from Smallrig. I was pleased to find that the one for my A7 IV fits perfectly. Pleased to save the money and because the one for the A7R IV is discontinued and backordered at many retailers.

I’ve received my A7RV and tested it with two L-brackets that i previously owned and both worked fine.
The first is the full length Really Right Stuff the fits the A7RIV, A9II, and A1. I’ve used it on all of these bodies.
The second is the Small Rig one from my A7IV. This is the 3666 which does not have the L piece so it’s more like a full length base plate.

Chrisd99, how do you like the Atoll tripod collar on your camera? It looks like it might encroach on your fingers - the A7RV grip is noticeably larger than my A7RIII.

Hey Scott, I don’t really notice any difference in handling the A7RV with Atoll versus my previous A7RIV. It’s the same issue trying to get your finger on the lens release button, but realize I have bigger fingers than average. I set up the ring forward to leave more space, and it’s fairly manageable.

One thing that’s improved with the A7RV is the shutter is closed when powered off (this is a setting). This means when I am installing the Atoll (without a lens attached), the sensor is protected from dust, assuming I don’t have a body cap installed (which I don’t usually since removing the body cap with the Atoll on is a pain.

Installing and removing the Atoll is not difficult, but it should be done once per photo session, and under controlled conditions, preferably indoors, ideally seated at a desk or table. There is an alignment trick during the install that takes only a few seconds, but it’s done with the shutter/sensor exposed. I wouldn’t want to be fapping about with installation outside on a busy, dusty street. There is no reason why the Atoll can’t be left on all the time, although that’s a bit of added weight, not unlike an L-bracket.

Chris

Thanks for the link to a brand I was not familiar with. Rogeti now says that it fits the a7R V.

I have a Kirk a7R IV and it is not a good fit on the a7R V. It seems that the anti-rotation curvature feature on the front and rear of the Kirk is a millimeter or two too narrow. The side by the ports is cockeyed when installed. It’s a mystery to me unless there are subtle dimensional tolerances and it’s enough to make a difference. I just ordered a Rogeti L-Bracket and they claim it fits. I wanted the Kirk to be my go-to L-Bracket.

I also find the SmallRig L-Bracket I used on both my A7RIV and A1 fit perfectly on the A7RV.

Agree the Small Rig 3660 L-bracket fits well and feels good in the hand.

It does have a couple of annoying problems though when used in camera-vertical mode.
If you have a long arca clamp like the RRS 60mm lever release clamp,
you cannot align the zero position on the clamp with the lens center index mark on the L-bracket.
It is about 5mm short. You need to go down to a 50mm or less length clamp to be able to align to the zero mark.
If you go below 50mm length and want to align to the index mark the clamp will only make contact with the one half of the rear L section because of the rear gap.

Also because of the gap in the rear part of the L-section there is no index mark there so you have to use the front mark which can be hard to see, being under the lens.

Thinking of getting the angle grinder out and extending the bracket channel a bit.

Small Rig's L-bracket for the A7M3 has the same first alignment problem.

I purchased one from ROGETI and it’s a perfect fit. A few days ago I received an email from Kirk and they are taking pre-orders for theirs. Kirk was my first choice however they were a little bit late to announce.

I’ve owned the RRS L bracket for my A7 R III and it was certainly nice but overpriced in my opinion. I recently bought this brand for my other A7R III as well as my A7R IV. I honestly prefer these over the RRS. They are just as well made and better designed IMO and I’ve found do less scratching on my camera bodies from rubbing. I just ordered this new version designed for the A7R V for my new A7R V camera . I have not received it yet but it’s on the way and I expect it to be just as nice as the previous ones I’ve owned. I like the red color version which accents Sony cameras nicely. I’ve found my previous L bracket from A7R IV does not fit the V perfectly. https://www.ebay.com/itm/255458017223?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=LmlxCxN8QvW&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=0YL46tPDQrm&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Looks good.
Longer channels and no gap on the L section would fix my SmallRig gripe.

Is this red version really a new version of their previous A7RM4 model?
On their ebay site the red "up to A7RM5" model has the same
MPN and UPC model numbers as the "up to A7RM4" black version?
