p.1 #1 · Found a perfect lens hood for RF 35/1.8 - Nikon HN-3
The Canon hood costs $42, and it is more like a step up filter ring than a lens hood. Not convinced so I was searching for an alternative.
The JJC flower shaped hood designed for this lens looks great, but it requires a flimsy adapter ring. I have doubts about its durability.
So I opened my old drawer and found a Nikon NH-3 hood, a metal screw mount hood which I believe was left forgotten when I sold my Nikon 35/1.4 AI-S many years ago. To my delight, it has the same 52mm thread. It can also take a 72mm front cap. It fits the RF 35/1.8 perfectly. I can left it on the lens with a 72mm cap on, adding only about 1 inch to the total length. It has about the same girth as the lens body, looks beautiful and classy

I have this hood as well as the Nikon HN-2 which i have used with various lenses over the years. It's a good thing to have in the toolkit.
Re. the JJC petal hood: the adapter ring is surprisingly solid. It should not come apart in normal use. I have no doubt that it might separate with a drop. However, that would probably be desirable, as the hood would absorb much of the impact, and since it is attached directly to the lens body, the front focusing group is protected.
A rigid metal hood like the Nikon threaded to the front focusing group will pose more risk of accidental damage. Canon's STM primes have their charms, but the external focusing design makes them mechanically more fragile, like the old EF 50 1.4.
