Anyone know the main difference between the Color Edge 27" CG2700S & 2700X? Is it mainly 4K resolution?

Is the older Color Edge CS2731 BK CNX 27" still a great Eizo display? On the Chromix website is seems like they may be phasing out this older model and they are selling them for roughly a $1K less than the aforementioned models. What would I be missing by purchasing the older model anything significant?

It does look like 4K is the biggest difference. Call 'em. They love to talk.

I have the CG2700S. Difference between this one and the CG2700X is indeed 2650x1440p vs 4k. At first I thought about waiting for the X model, but after seeing the S in real life, this was my choice for photography. It' s a superb monitor and the resolution is perfect for a 27" photography monitor. All CS models need to be calibrated with an external tool. CG models have internal calibration device which is VERY handy and good!
Beside that both the new X and the new S come with usb-c connection.

Same question from me also 2700s versus the cs2740 (price is looking good comparatively). the price for new models are 2x.

In 2019 the 27" CG (can't remember model) was about $2200 and the CS2730 without the calibrator was about $1100. The current price difference is only about +10 to 15%. That's not too bad considering many other products lately.

I suppose the real quesiton is ... is the new 2700S worth the coin as it is at 2k resolution or is it really worth the 800$ more to get the 2700x in 4k.

Thoughts?

For me 4k isn' t worth the extra coin. 2k is perfect for a 27" monitor, if you want to use it for photography. And yes, it' s 100% worth the € 2334,- I paid for it last summer.
4k would not get me anything extra. On the contrary.
My computer is a 27" 5k iMac; wonderful for viewing, but for working on images/photography I very much prefer my Eizo.
I don' t do any editing/ prepare for printing/etc. on my 5k iMac anymore.

I have the CG2700X 4K and I'm really glad I purchased it from B&H. Best monitor I've ever owned. And the ports work equally well with my MacBook M2 Max (USB-C) and my Windows 10 desktop with the nVidia 2080TI (USB-C & Displayport). Is CG2700S enough? For photography certainly. For video maybe you also want the 4K - up to you. Do you want to save money getting an Eizo CS2731 or CS2740 plus possibly a Calibrite ColorChecker Display Plus - great idea! Just get an Eizo you can afford and don't worry because it'll be the best choice you've ever made. I've owned a lot of monitors over the last three decades and right now Eizo is 100% number 1 for people like us.

A little OT ... but, wondering how much difference folks think about the Eizo monitors vs. the Retina display in the MBP.

Yes, I know that I could use an external monitor with the MBP, but my workstation (lap) doesn't support an external monitor.

I guess what I'm asking is, would you consider the MBP Retina P3 display to be 99%, 90%, 80%, 50%, etc. as good as the Eizo's. Is the MBP as close as it gets in a laptop display. I've considered the Mini or Studio, but in each case, it would mean an external monitor that I just haven't figured out how to get one to fit on my lap (recliner).

I have both the M1 MBP with the Retina screen and an Eizo CG277. The M1 has the best laptop display I've every seen but it's not an Eizo. In terms of uniformity absolutely neutral grayscale and in terms of clipping the last few levels of tone at either end of the scale, the Eizo is in a class of its own. Doesn't mean you can't use the MBP screen, and I do when I'm traveling but the Eizo is the one I trust. And, it's annoying as hell to have to zoom to 200 percent to see pixel level detail on the laptop.

Thanks Peter.

I don't know that I'll get away from the laptop. But, that gives me perspective that if I want a "final inspection" workstation, the external monitor may have additional merit ... particularly nearer the ends.

Kent - I think that if you monitor especially your highlight and shadow values with the Info Palette, you can probably do a pretty good job with the laptop. I mean, I brought up a test image that I use all the time that has memory colors, gray steps and a bunch of known images, and it looked close enough on the laptop to the Eizo for me to make overall judgements about the images while shooting tethered. But, somewhat ironically, it was the sRGB "internet" setting that came closest to the overall look of the Eizo. The fact that Apple locks you out of making any adjustments on top of those presets is idiotic and probably keeps unsuspecting newbies from making stupid choices, but I really don't like having my hands tied. Still, that setting was fine for my purposes, y'know - eff it, it's close enough. Let's get on with it.

I'll cross the external monitor bridge when / if I get there. That's kinda what I wanted to know. Appreciate the insight to the RGB thing with Apple, too ... i.e. consumer proof, err, I mean standardized across Apple products.

I'm not really sure what it is. You can go into the Displays portion of your System Preferences and you can set any one of about half a dozen hardwired presets. They are basically the same identical presets available to you in the front panel of the Eizo, except with the Eizo, you can also set that as a target for your calibration and plug in your own white and black points or color temp as well. You *should* be able to change the luminosity depending on your ambient light but not according to how Apple has set this up. Maybe it is to idiot proof, but these decisions are pretty stupid. Still, within a range of normal-ish lighting levels, those presets seem to work pretty well. It's just that, for instance, if you go outside, you can't crank it up for being outside in the sun.

iMac guy since 2009. If I buy an Eizo for a ton of money and edit wedding pics, will the pics look correct on my bride's iPhone? That's really all that matters in my industry. Editing on an iMac the colors are identical to the iPhone and brides are always happy.

Yes, they will, but if everyone's happy right now there's no reason for you to upgrade. The real problem for you will be that iMac's are history and the next computer you buy you'll also have to buy a monitor for it as well. Then you'll have to make the choice of an over priced Apple badged LG 5K display or a real high end pro level one like an Eizo, which really aren't as much as you think - I think $1400 with a calibrator or a BenQ for $800 or so.

Which are less than the Apple monitor. That said, the nano version (makes it more matte) of the Apple monitor does look nice in the store, but DANG, they are proud of it.

Being in the market for an external monitor for my M1 Max MBP I've given the Eizo monitors a good hard look (though my needs are for HDR video grading capabilities vs. Adobe RGB-space still image proofing), what I know about the differences between the CG and CS lineups comes directly from Eizo here...

EIZO ColorEdge — ColorEdge CG or CS?
https://www.eizocolour.com/spotlight/coloredge-cs-or-cg/

All three of the monitors you mention are touted by Eizo as covering 99% Adobe RGB, so if you're main usage is photo editing I should think the CS2731 should suffice? Also, that model was released in 2019, so I'm not sure how late in the Eizo monitor-refresh-cycle it might be, perhaps you might wish to inquire?

As for me, I'm holding off until the rumored Apple 27" and 32" Mini-LED monitors arrive, despite Apple's, er, somewhat different color-calibration methodologies for their Color Space presets...

Apple's monitors, including the Pro Display XDR, have gotten pretty crushingly bad reviews from professional colorists; Eizo would probably be a better choice for video if you can't spring for a Flanders.
