Over two years and multiple firmware updates into my original R6 and it still freezes up. It happens several times a day at a wedding while I'm shooting. I consider this a minor annoyance at worst, but it would be nice if Canon finally fixed this.

I realize that the R6II just started shipping, but to those who have gotten one, have you experienced any lockups yet?

Just curious what cards or other set up you are using? I have not had issues with lockups.

Sony and Sandisk SD cards. Nothing but Canon lenses. Pretty basic setup really.

Can you describe how the R6 has locked up for you?

I recently shot a hockey tournament and did about 5000 photos in a day. During that time the R6 'bogged down' several times - at least 3, maybe 4 times. It would finish writing photos to the card, but the EVF feed would either freeze, or progress something like one frame every few seconds. I would just pull the battery out to 'reboot' the camera since turning it off didn't seem to actually do anything. That camera is a loaner from a Canon rep and was on FW 1.4 that I updated with his permission to 1.6. I shot a football game with it on 1.4 and it seemed to be fine. But that game I also had another R6 loaner on RW 1.6 and it too was good... so not exactly sure what might be causing the problems. The football game was shot on PNY 128GB UHS-II high speed cards. The hockey tournament was on brand new cheap and slow Sandisk Ultra cards, that as far as I could determine, are not counterfeit. (I did a write/read test of each card to full capacity and they hit the specified capacity and write/read times were consistent and within spec). I have some other cards coming today - a range of Sandisk, Transcend and Kingston to try with the R6II that I also just received today.

I will shoot another hockey tournament tomorrow with the R6II and will let you know if I have any lockup problems with it.

I believe the lockups are most related to the camera idling... or going to "sleep" briefly after not being used for a little bit. It never locks up while I'm using it. Instead... I'll be doing something else for a few minutes, then I'll pick up my camera to use it and... nothing. It's like the camera is asleep but won't wake back up.

Cycling power usually doesn't help. I have to pop the battery to bring it back.

Four games into the hockey tournament and the camera has locked up 5 times. Screens go black, no response for about 5 seconds, then comes back. Wondering if it’s the cards. Kingston 32GB Canvas React Plus UHS-II… They’re brand new and I did full card write read tests in the computer last night… Shooting in full res JPEG higher compression. Seems to happen during brief idle moments, literally just seconds, between shots

FYI - I have an R5 and it will lock up randomly. For me it happens after I take a shot and go to review the picture. I only use Canon "R" lens and Sandisk cards. I have not updated the firmware (past two times) but will give that a try. I have talked with other R5 users (same setup) and they claim no issue with theirs. Very odd.

Just to clarify after more time with the camera - it doesn't lock up. I can still shoot with it and get usable images because AF functions normally, etc. I just can't see anything because the live feed is gone for 5-10 seconds before it comes back. So rather than lockup, I'll call it blackout.

I posted more about it in the R6II initial impressions thread. It happened to me when reviewing images, but also when shooting, or about to shoot while the camera has a live view feed, rather than playing back images. I'm less suspicious about the memory cards (tried a couple different brands/models with the same results) and think it might be the sensor that switches between the rear display and the EVF when you bring the camera up to your eye. I didn't think of this until the last two games of the tournament when I turned off that feature and had it set to only use the EVF. Didn't have any blackouts during those two games. Maybe too small a sample to know if it's actually the cause of the problem.

There was one "lockup" that was different from the blackouts, where the image in the EVF froze and nothing responded. An error warning appeared, but I was pressing buttons and caused that disappear before I could read what the error code was (I don't think the R6II plays back error codes like some Canon cameras do).

FWIW, I had a 500D (T1i) that acted like this once it was a few years old. The battery wouldn't hold much of a charge anymore. The problem disappeared when I replaced the battery. Make sure you are using a new(er) battery.

Is "shoot with no lens attached" enabled?

No locking up on my R6? My answer doesn’t answer your question, but I’ve never come across it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

R6MkII: I've been using it for a couple weeks, no issues or locking up.

It's only been a week of daily use, but I managed to have one lockup on my R6 MK II. Had to pop up out the battery and it returned to normal.

Could you describe the incident in more detail?

I've experienced two different types of lockup. 1) EVF and rear display go black but camera will continue to function (AF, make exposures and save to card). 5-10 seconds later the live view feed resumes and camera returns to normal. Happened a couple dozen times over the course of photographing ~30 hockey games. 2) Live view feed froze in the EVF and camera was unresponsive; pulled battery to reset camera. Happened once during that hockey tournament.

It was 2) Live view feed froze in the EVF and camera was unresponsive; pulled battery to reset camera. Was using the RF 24-105 4L and just turned on the camera and tried to focus.

Mine has locked up twice in 4000 shots. Both times when I was making changes in a hurry. Had to pull the battery to resurrect it. I have had no problems with shooting in a more orderly fashion. Don't know what the problem is but I was advised by a canon service guy that it is "better not to update if the camera is working well for you".

I've had intermittent lock up issues, I guess you might call them, throughout the years, that I had to pull the battery, but more like 3 a year at most.

This spring I had issues on a different body trying to shoot immediately after sleep. I had to either 1) anticipate and half press the shutter release so it could get going or 2) set the auto power off for several minutes so it didn't go to sleep. I've had issues on older bodies using pretty full large cards. Full cards slow things down. I suppose you could take an extra battery and not let the camera go to sleep during the ceremony or important moments
