p.1 #1 · Small compact camera for the pocket / jacket
Hello!
I use a Sony a7 III with 35 GM and 85 DN DG ART and an iPhone 13 so far.
Where the Sony is too big, I only use the iPhone 13. The pictures "on" the iPhone look good. But on the big screen, they quickly don't look as nice.
Therefore, the consideration: a small camera, which I can pack in the best case in the back pocket or if not, in the jacket pocket.
Considerations:
- Sony 35/2.8 to the a7 III, then it would fit in the jacket, but not in the pants pocket.
- Sony RX100
- Sony RX1r II, very expensive, therefore quite outdated, but 35mm in pocket format
- Sony a7c, but it's not that much smaller than the a7 III either

If you're after 35mm in a pocket format, the Fuji x100V has a great 23/2 lens with a central shutter on a 26MP APSC BSI sensor and a high resolution EVF/OVF hybrid. The RX1 series certainly has the better lens and greater resolution, but I found the ergonomics of the Fuji to be superior and it's much thinner, so it'll fit in more pockets.

FOr a super compact, high quality file with a 35mm lens nothing beats the RX1RII. The only downsides are battery life and the lack of a touch screen. IQ is sensational. And it's genuinely tiny. Images will look like your Sony with a GM strapped to the front of it. Actually I wish they could get that look from the detachable Sony glass. It's the only Sony I tolerate, long term.
The Q2 is spectacual if you like a 28mm and the X100V is super fun to use with a slight drop in IQ and resolution to the 135fomat systems. Haven't used the Ricoh because personally I like a VF.
For an interchangeable camera there's the m43 compact bodies. They mostly punch above theri weight as the small lenses can be so very very good. I carried a PenF for years (still have it) as my all in one compact walk around. If you're not in a rush them wait and see what Fuji do with the new 40MP sensor. There's likely to ba a new X100 and a new XT40.

I've had a Panasonic LX-100 for many years. Still use it, occasionally. It has much better ergonomics than my phone (S10+). The only thing missing, is a tilting rear screen. I should compare their IQ, but who has time ?

Unless you want to use GR with mf snap option, I would go with A7C or Rx100 with phase detection af for kids... As you say A7C is not that smaller than A7III, thicker than the apsc camaras with same size. RX100 will give you more dof/less blur compared to the other cameras... RX1R II has the best rendering, but slow af. However RX1R II has the older face/eye af from A7R II...

Great IQ and actually fit into a pants pocket? Ricoh GR3/X. I have a GR3 or GR1v with me at all times because of how small and easy to carry it is. I only have to decide if I want to shoot film or digital.

Yashicia T4 or Olympus Infinity Jr if you want to be cool
I have yet to be convinced that the GR series is worth carrying in terms of IQ. I much prefer the output of the X100 cameras but they are not actually pocketable.

Ricoh GRIII or GRIIIx would be my recommendation.
Same recommendation: very small, easy to use, designed for photographers, excellent image quality...
I've used many small cameras over the years and this one is a winner.

I just bought a basically brand new RX1RII...Still an AMAZING little camera. Face and eye detect work really well. The sensor/lens combo just creates superior/flexible files....After going around in circles for years I've come back to the smallest/best compact IMO.
