p.1 #1 · Somewhere under the rainbow(s)

These images were the result of a set of convergent circumstances. In late September a couple of years ago, a fellow photog and I were staying in a rental just east of St. Mary Lake in Glacier National Park. At dawn one morning, we awoke to a developing thunderstorm over the lake. As the sun rose and lit the scene to our west (and as I scrambled out of bed to grab my camera and attach the 100-400), a double rainbow began to appear. The ridge we were on blocked the light from the rising sun on the lower part of this scene, including both rainbows, yielding an unusual set of images made over a span of about 8 minutes. These are presented here in reverse chronological order because the final image I shot that morning was the most dramatic, but the two earlier ones have their own drama as well. It was quite the memorable morning at GNP. Got to get back there very soon! Steve

Thanks Ross! Yes, it was a really dramatic few minutes. The whole trip to GNP was full of dramatic scenes. My only regret was that we missed the big snowstorm that hit two days later! Steve

The first image clearly shows that "we are NOT alone" and that Big Foot is actually an alien that is being beamed back up to the mother ship. That area is a well known sasquatch "hot spot" and you captured one of the most important photographs that will help solve this mystery once and for all.

All joking aside, these are fantastic images. Love the dramatic warm light mixed with the moody sky and rainbow in the second image. Not sure if I could have held my composure together long enough to get as nice of shots as you did.

Thank you Scott. I kinda like the last two myself. But that rainbow bleed in the first one is not something I've seen before. I appreciate your comments! Steve

Dave - Your comments gave me a real chuckle. That first image is a bit otherwordly. It definitely seemed so at the time! I love being surprised by such events, which is one of the things I like most about photography, i.e., being in a position to capture surprises. Time was that I didn't have the equipment or the skills to pull that off. But both my equipment and my skills are improving as I shoot more and as a result of spending time here on with FM'ers. Thanks much for your comments! Made my day. Steve
