Dan, Thanks for sharing your adventure. I love that his talent led to his, his wife's, and their eleven children's freedom from slavery. A great true story, and the photos are wonderful.

Thank you Jim!
After reading the local news article(years ago) I told myself I just had to retrace his steps!
I live in his area so I had to re-trace the cemeteries that were around in the 1800's. That was NOT easy! I love research so I just plowed through local geographical plats from the 1800's and got the "jist" of where these cemeteries might be. I found them all! Some of the churches are gone. Over 2 counties and many miles. The quarry is not confirmed but I found the area. I won't say that was it but it was the only area on Sams Creek where stone was still available.
Thanks!

Congratulations! Your dedication to finding and documenting the headstones of Sebastian Boss Hammond is awe-inspiring. It's essential to preserve and honor the work of African American gravestone carvers like Hammond, and your efforts will ensure that his legacy is not forgotten. I like how older gravestones look; however, you can find similar designs in the aesthetic gravestone. Thanks for sharing these meaningful photos!
