Pixieset is another great option. The galleries look great and you have control over access and downloading files, both individual and as a gallery. Their free plan is mostly limited by space. I used it for a while before ponying up for a bit more storage.

I also use Pixieset and use their paid plan. My profile WWW link takes you to what mine is, I have been using them going on 5 years. Rock solid product, getting more features all the time.

IMO, you should consider how your customers will consume your product. 85+% of parents in my area are using mobile to gain access, purchase and download their images.

Smart thinking, especially with young kids. Whatever you pick, look for three things:

1. An unguessable link, not a public profile or a short custom URL someone could stumble on.
2. A password or sign-in on top of the link, because links get forwarded in group texts.
3. Pages hidden from search engines, so the album never shows up on Google.

A Google Photos shared album is free and link-only, which is fine for low stakes, but there's no password, so anyone the link gets forwarded to can see everything. SmugMug can password-protect galleries if you want an established paid option.

Disclosure: I'm the founder of Image Depot (imagedepot.net), so take this with that in mind. It covers your case on the free plan:
- every gallery gets a long random link
- you can add a password, require parents to enter their email before viewing (so you can see exactly who's looked), or both
- gallery pages are set to stay out of search engines
- you can make one gallery for the season with an album per game

The free plan is 3 galleries and 2 GB, no card needed. Happy to help you set it up if you try it.
