p.1 #1 · New Canon RF 15-30 and RF 24 In Stock Release date 8-25 & Review

I just talked with the owner of Berger Bros Camera in NY. They have both the new Canon RF 15-30 and RF 24 in stock but they cannot sell until 8/25 per Canon. I cannot say enough good about Brad and the gang at Berger Bros if one does call let them know you saw a post on FredMiranda

My 24 shipped from B&H this morning. So they should be readily available.

I’m curious about how the 24 performs. I have the original 24/1.4L and would like to see how the old relic compares.

I'll be comparing it with my mk2, I love that lens but it's just too big to pack as an add-on. I have the 35/1.8 too but that focal length never did it for me, I'm a 24 and 50 guy.

This seems quite promising. IQ seems good, and the bokeh is pleasing in their samples.

It does look pretty good. I wasn't quite in the market for a 24, but I won't rule it out either.

It was interesting reading down in the article, about the lens correction. In particular, I was thinking about the distortion correction. yes, there's barrel distortion, but it's not extreme even with the correction off. Still not convinced that it's better to have my pixels stretched to correct lens weakness, but I also know that it costs a lot more to design and build near-perfect glass where this is corrected optically (along with all the other aberrations that can occur).

Looking forward to seeing some examples from the people that have bought the lens.

Indeed. And the resulting lens is likely to be much bigger and heavier as well.

I actually like the possibilities afforded by making digital corrections a part of the lens design. The quality of such designs should be judged holistically, after intended corrections are applied, and not dismissed out of hand. It's a different mindset than the one we have used historically though.

I am waiting to see reviews before buying 15-30. Likely a mistake and it will be fine and then I will have to wait for 6 months but I have yet to return a lens and the bad ones are stacking up.

My experience with 16 and 24-105 non L versions is that:
They are very acceptable
They really are wider than 16 or 24 and with correction they are 16 and 24-105
The corners get lower iq if you employ distortion/vignetting correction but anyone shooting landscape usually does not need to correct the distortion much.
Most people that rate the lens do it after lens correction. This is misleading or at least only part of the picture.
You will likely get a 22mm (24mm) and a 13-30mm lens with pretty good corners if you don't stretch (auto correct) the corners in raw processing and a bit weaker corners if you do (architecture shooters) is my expectation.

And the nit picky raters will say the sky is falling but for me (backpacker/landscape) the lens will be great. Not L like but I cannot carry L up a mountain with equipment

I am waiting for the pictures !!!

I do hope the 15-30 is a good lens. I own the 14-35L, and so it would have to be better optically to sway me towards the 15-30. I will say the reason I got the 14-35, and am selling my Sigma 14-24, which is a little better optically, is because the 14-35 is so small and light. It's an amazingly compact lens for what it offers.

The 24 is somewhat interesting, but I'm not really too interested in the 15-30, since I have the 14-35. I stumbled across that lens while on vacation last fall - the store had it in stock so I grabbed it. Sold my excellent EF 16-35 f/4L after I got back home. It was a move that I probably didn't need to make, but it does now get me an acceptably wide 'normal' lens on the R7, and of course, an nice ultra-wide on the R5.

We'll see what the 24 offers - I have the original 24/1.4L that I bought used here on FM several years ago (thanks, PetKal). I really don't use it much, and I'm not sure I'd get top dollar for it any more, so I'm probably just going to keep it and not get the new one.

whew on the fence just took the R5 and R7 with the 15-30 on it out to the street at f4.5 and f6.3 the edges are pretty rough (not sharp at all) I'm not going to begin to make a call yet but I hope it gets better than this ouch

just a super quick snap with the 15-30 on the R5 @15 and f6.3 no editing at all 100% of frame
Need to do a lot more testing it is really soft on the edges much more than the new RF 24
