I'm really hoping this won't be an $800+ priced lens!
p.s. I'm holding off on buying the Sony 24mm f2.8 G until this new Tamron is released. If they are at a similar price point, I'll get the Tamron hands down. However, if it's in the $800+ range, I'll just get the Sony 24mm prime instead.

I just don't see it costing any cheaper than $800. The 17-28 and 28-75 both retail for $899 now, though B&H has the 17-28 on sale for $799. It's a brand new lens, and the cost of lenses are going higher and higher.

Here is why this lens attracts me and then - once I go through the logic - repels me.
Assuming it is very high quality, it becomes an excellent, small bridge lens between a long tele and an UWA. If - for instance - I traveled with the 12-24 and 35-150 (or 50-400 - or perhaps even the 100-400); this small lens could bridge the two without adding much weight; and make a great walk around/street lens in the process (28 and 40 being my favorite walk around Focal Lengths).
However... One of the major attractions to the 35-150 and/or 50-400 is you can pair it with an UWA - like a 16-35 - and have a great two lens solution. If I am going to add a 4th lens, why not a 24-70, 24-105 or 28-75? They give a lot more flexibility; and the 28-75 G2 is light, reasonably priced, and provides portrait length (I recently sold it for the 24-70 GM II).
I guess my point is this is attractive - as any new focal length and small lens might be - but it doesn't solve any problems for me unless it ends up being so darn good, it becomes my go to street lens with an A7C....Show more →
For 35/40 users like me, it solves all my problems. It'll be parked at 35-40 most of the time. The 20-24mm is just saving me from switching out a lens when I need the occasional wide shot.

I'm pretty excited about this one as a walk around for my wife's camera. She's going to an A7c and this would be excellent for that IMO.
First when this lens was announced I thought that it wasn't for me. But the more I think about it, it might actually work as my everyday lens on my everyday camera, the A7C. We'll see what the price and performance says about it. I like to include the sun in my images and Tamron has sofar let me down on flare resistance and sunstar quality in all three zooms I have now and have owned.
I hope the rep is right and it could be available soon!
Before I consider this lens, I'm waiting for legit reviews from Dustin Abbott and Christopher Frost to name 2. And if the lens proves worthy it will be an excellent all around landscape/street lens.
Now....wish list! Tamron should come out with a 40-70 f2.8!

Yes agreed. I'll probably pre-order it, since I'm almost certain that I want it, but I'll cancel my pre-order if the reviews come up with any huge issues. But to be honest they would have to be pretty big for me to want to pass this up, it just fits into my needed use case so well, and I trust Tamron (somewhat). I think the only thing that could really put me off is massive distortion, like on their 20mm prime. But even a little is fine with me.
Hmm, 40-70 is an interesting thought. I think I'd personally be more interested in 50-90, but neither of those really fit into my current needs at the moment anyway. But I am so much more interested in the idea of these compact fast zooms than I ever have been about the big ones, so the more the merrier!

Not really any more relevant info from this leaked brochure, but it says the scheduled ship date is October 27th and that pricing should be released in the next few days.
The listed AOV matches up with the focal lengths almost perfectly, so I'm hoping that means it doesn't have massive distortion meant to be corrected in post.
I just put my Zony 16-35 up for sale and will probably list another lens too. Unless the reviews come back with some big issue, I'm looking forward to picking up this lens.

Good price. If it’s light enough, this would be a great walk around / travel lens for me because my taste runs to wide angle. But the quality and rendering needs to fire my imagination; 2.8 bodes well. We’ll see whether it inspires reviewers.
For now I mostly shoot with my beloved CV40 and the lovely, practical, but big 24-105.

Weight is 365 grams.
I think this could be a good everyday lens to sit on my A7C, but for me it depends on how well it can stand to be pointed into the sun, if it flares much in those situations and if the sunstar is okey. Sofar I have been disappointed in that regard on all Tamrons I have had (17-28, 28-200, 70-180).
Very curious if the out of focus regions in some of these pictures is photoshopped. If not, this lens punches quite above its budget considering the images also look printably resolvant and also quite well corrected for CA.
