Thanks to each and every one who commented.
I took another flight later in the evening and the design on the ground was dramatically different. The site is changing by the hour and craters are beginning to form at the fissure line. This is a more powerful eruption than the one last year.
No doubt every coming day will bring its own imprint. Great opportunities for photographers interested in this kind of subject.

Thank you for sharing, Rajan - very cool images. Out of curiosity, did you have some warning this was going to happen or did you just react quickly?
Thanks, Austin.
For several days preceding the eruption, there was an active earthquake swarm in the area (over 2000 small earthquakes every day of magnitude 2 and 3) and in the immediate 2 days before Reykjavík and surrounds had experienced a couple of unusually sharp jolts (magnitude 5.2). We were on edge after being woken in the middle of the night on Aug 1.
It was clear that magma was on the move, but it is impossible to predict if there's going to be an eruption and if so when and where exactly. As soon as the juice started flowing, my friend, who owns a heli company, messaged me and we were able to get there quickly.
