p.1 #1 · Lassen National Park - Painted Dunes in fog
Congratulations to dakel for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 7 votes - View Previous Winners
Last weekend I visited Lassen National Park and camped out Butte Lake campground for two nights with a goal of photographing the painted dunes at sunset, sunrise, blue hour and maybe even with the milky way. Things didn't quite turn out as we expected as an unusual June storm moved through the park, carrying cold temperatures, rain and even snow. We almost packed it in and left but I'm glad we didn't because on the final morning, a cloud inversion layer had formed over the lava fields, and fog over the painted dunes. The conditions were so special that it would almost impossible to take bad photos. Don't worry I did but I'm not going to show them here!
Post processing notes - all single images, post-processed in lightroom with pretty standard adjustments to exposure, contrast, white balance.

Spectacular, every image. But the ones in fog (#2 & #3) kick it up a notch, with their alien world feel.
Thanks Rajan. Got lucky with the conditions but it is a really cool place to visit.

These are great. I was only there once when it was covered in snow, had no idea it could look like that. Well done.
Thanks John. Appreciate it. When looking on your website to see if I could find your photos of the area. You have a great gallery.

Spectacular shots Derrick. Congrats. Sorry I couldn't make it, what a loss. Damn...
I've never seen shots of those dunes with a fog, and they do look great.

This is quite a series. Striking and unusual. I haven't been to Lassen since I was a kid and while I knew of some interesting scenic and geological areas in and around the park, hadn't heard or seen of this area. Going to have hit the "Google" and check this out some more.

Pure magic, Derrick! What an amazing landscape and amazing conditions! Congratulations on hanging around during less than ideal conditions! Glad it all paid off for you! Truly beautiful work!

This brings back memories. The last time I was at the painted dunes and Butte Lake was well over 20 years ago when I was in the early days of learning to use a view camera (with film). You got some incredible light/fog and your compositions are fantastic. Great job!
