Totally agree with you on that. Hopefully Roger will tear down a new 24-70 GM II like he has done to the 70-200 GM so we can at least see how it looks internally.

I’ve got a wedding to shoot soon so just ordered the Tamron G2 28-75. Will mount it on the A9II with the 70-200GMII on the A1 for casual stuff and shoot primes for the posed stuff. Not a wedding pro but she’s a great friend and asked me so I couldn’t say no.
I just don’t see the premium of the GM being worth it for my use case(s)

Reviving this thread as I'm going through the same process to decide if I sell the Tamron or return the Sony 24-70 GMII. I have tried very hard (pixel peeping on a 5K monitor) to see some differences between the 2.
I tested and compared the center and the 4 corners, at different FL and apertures. They are so close. Both perfectly centered I think.
The Tamron has slightly more CA (but really not an issue), and colors a bit warmer. At 70mm, I found the Tamron a hair sharper at f/2.8. At 28mm, the Sony is a tiny bit sharper across the frame. At normal viewing distance (on 5K 27"), they are basically identical.
I was at least expecting some bokeh/rendering difference as the GM2 has 2 additional aperture blades. Bokeh balls are a bit more circular in the edges if you really look for it, but that's it.
I ordered the Sony for the 24mm (I don't have any wide angle lens), and the aperture ring (I use it all the time on the 35GM and 70-200 GMII). I won't get that on the Tamron no matter what. But now I realize I have a "perfect" copy of the Tamron, this makes me reconsider the switch.
Curious to know what the OP has decided. Or if others have switches.

I purchased 35-150 and I am very happy with it. I used to own 24-70 G in my Nikon days and had Tamron 28-70 G1 when I first switched to Sony. Tamron 35-150 beats both hands down in rendering, sharpness and overall IQ. It is as good as the 35 GM. It is a bit heavier, but none of these lenses are light enough and small enough to make the whole thing pocketable, so I'm okay with carrying a bit of extra weight and size for more in IQ and rendering. YMMV of course. Between the two lenses in this thread, Tamron seems like it gives you 95% of Sony at 1/3 the cost. I think it is a no brainer for most people. Just pick up a pocketable prime in UWA range and you should be all set.

As good as the GM? Maybe at f=4-11, but I haven't seen anything to point to the Tamron being as good at f=2-2.8, or am I missing something?

I would be perfectly fine with the pictures from the 35-150mm, it really delivers with a nice rendering.
But prefer my standard zoom to start at a wider 28 or 24mm. (And I love my 70-200 GMII )
There is a plethora of 24mm options for the Sony. I like the Sigma 24m f/2 but the price is close to a used 24GM. And then the 24GM is not really a pocketable 24mm .
Maybe I give up the standard zoom and go with 24, 35 and 70-200.
Will take more pictures with the 24-70GMII during the long week-end to see.

Thanks, that's a pretty good comparison. I guess the only thing I'd wonder would be how the image compares at ~1-0.6m, as that's about portrait on a 35mm and IIRC the Tamron isn't quite as resolvant at closer distances. The better copies of the Tamron seem to be on the lower end of the copy variation bellcurve of the GM, which... well, it was already my second favorite 35 of f=2 or brighter but this just makes the Tamron look even better. It's a bit hard to believe about a zoom, to be honest.
The only fly in the ointment for the 35-150 seems to be copy variation—but that's a problem more essential to zooms in general than the Tamron. The only thing exacerbated by the Tamron would be the parameters both in terms of range and light gathering mean variation on copies would both be more likely and more visible.
If I'm being honest, I'd probably be more likely to pick up the Tamron than the GM if I could be guaranteed a good copy. Kind of expensive in Europe to go through multiple copies if you get a bad one, however.

Tamron actually looses a bit of sharpness (looks like SA to me) at MFD, but it's mostly visible on the long end. At 35mm and the distance you mention I didn't really notice any degradation...

How about the difference from the Tamron 28-75 G1? I have the G1 and the 24GM, and I'm considering selling them for the 24-70 GMII. Probably just the GAS talking, but I am curious.
. We're really spoiled for choice these days!
