Not looking all too awful, actually. At this point of knowledge, high ISO is the biggest question.

I really like the weather-sealing on that frog!

Thanks, I was answering Ray Still's post saying he was having problems getting his control ring to work, but he has not responded.

I don't have delivery yet on mine. I have used it a lot on my R5. What mode are you shooting in? What other RF lens have you tried? I have mine set so it is not active unless I 1/2 push the shutter button. Is your exposure active when you are trying it? Have you set the control ring on the 18-150 to be control ring and not focus?

Naw, there are so many settings on these new cameras, it gets confusing. I had a hard time getting my R5 set up, but when it all came together, great. Also, the control ring will work in manual for EC IF you are using Auto ISO. That is how I shoot most of the time.

OT, but how did you get f/6.7 at 500mm from the 100-500?

I had a 90D for a few months and mostly used it in live view because the AF was so much better, more accurate, that way, than the traditional AF through the viewfinder. IMO, the 90D is a decent camera that would be a lot better if had an EVF. Which now is pretty much what the R7 is - a mirrorless 90D with some additional improvements. IOW, I wouldn't bother with the 90D if consistent AF performance is a priority.

Thanks for the info again guys...I need all the focus help I can get, .
Mirrorless is certainly the new way to go or the only way to go. The lens adapter or new RF lens are irritating tho.
Hopefully with the adapter it won't be an issue for any lens I have. I do like the looks and feel of the new RF lens tho, just need more $.

Sure, but the adapter is an inexpensive solution to let you use your existing EF lenses, therefore giving you some time to save your pennies for RF upgrades.

Plus, some of those adapters do things you can't do with native RF glass, such as the drop-in filter option (good for some UWA lenses without front filter threads). Or Canon's EF-RF 'speed booster' for near full frame lens coverage/angle of view with EF glass on a crop sensor. Hopefully someone will try this adapter on the R7 to see how well the optics hold up on an APS-C ~32MP sensor...

Wasn't much happening this morning but the light was nice. You needed a manlift to get eyelevel with the dove. Did get some fairly close up shots of a laughing gull with the 100-400II and with the 1.4x III. I cropped the dove to 19mp and I think it held up okay considering I used the extender....

I noticed the same thing. I'm going to assume that he might have been at 499mm or something and it just registered the length at 500mm.

I think I remember reading something about if you changed the aperture increments from 1/3 stop to 1/2 stop it would show f6.7 instead instead of 7.1. I think they also said it was just tricking the camera into saying that and the actual aperture size wasn't changing.

Hate to say it but I have never used auto iso till this weekend at a small airshow.

Ya, what's another $100 for an adapter. Then there is the $200 one I'm trying to figure out but don't think I need that one. ( control ring mount adapter )

I got the control ring adapter. Since I use the control ring for EC, it makes it available to my old lens I am not updating to RF glass. IE:100mm macro, 24-105 and 16-35, 50mm nifty fifty.

I received the R7

Quite surprisingly, the R7 feels better in my hand than the Om-1 and turning the dials is considerably easier. That being said the main controls are different than on the D-500. The front control dial is on top, strange but easy to reach and turn. The back dial sits flat but about where your thumb can easily reach. Unlike the OM-1 it does come with a separate charger.

I purchased a kit and that was not a mistake. the 40-150 small zoom makes a compact package my wife will love.

Battery is charging

Exposure compensation - camera will meter its standard exposure, then add or reduce that by the amount of stops you dial in. Helpful when part of the scene may be much brighter or darker than another part, or if your subject is backlit.

Auto iso is good in manual mode for freezing action - i can set a SS, and an aperture value, and let the camera change the ISO to get the exposure correct. For landscapes or other stuff where you have more latitude on either aperture or SS auto ISO isn't really necessary. On the newer bodies that can easily go to 25 or 50k ISO, its very flexible tool. On older bodies where 6400 might be a limit, its a little less useful.

The control ring is nice, but not necessary. I ended up with one of each. You never had a lens control ring before, so you won't miss it if you don't have it. If you have the money, it can be nice as you can add a bunch of different functions to it. Still, I find I don't use it too much. Exposure Compensation is the nicest use for it. You can also set it to ISO, AF mode an a bunch of other things. If your body already has all the dials you are used to, you may not find a big use for an extra one.

In manual mode the R7 does sound like a Nikon. Quite comforting to a Nikon shooter like me but not optimum.

The Canon 100-500 is quite long and fat compared to my D-500/500pf and presents a completely different feel. (The OM-1 feels much like a shrunk D-500/500pf). However, the controls on the R7 were easy to use and once I program the lens control rings, I think the controls will work just fine for me. (Yes, the on-off-movie button is easy to knock.)

Maybe some pictures later if I have the camera set up properly and the birds show up.

First shot cropped from 6960x4640 down to 3119x2079, then resized for posting to 1500x1000. From jpeg SOOC.

Cooper's Hawk was too far away, so very large crop.
