I'm really no good at coming up with topic titles, sorry!
One of my close friends who is also a photographer and I drove to the Vernonia Mill in Oregon to take some photos of his roommates, Caleb and Ahna. There was no point to the photographs, the goal was to just to take a quick last-minute roadtrip to a cool location and be creative. My friend focused mainly on photographing Ahna who is a very experienced model, while I was more inspired by Caleb who has never been photographed before. He also brought a sword that he was hoping to be photographed with. I really love stuff like that so of course I made sure to get some shots with the sword. Unfortunately I don't care much for many of the photos I took inside the mill itself, which is one of the most unique locations I've ever seen. The building is missing it's roof, however instead of a roof there are two very tall trees growing inside the structure and during this time of year their foliage creates a faux rooftop in place of the original one. It's really very cool to see in person, however the foliage rooftop causes a green cast in much of the available lighting inside the structure and personally that green cast is something I struggle with correcting in post (nor do I want to create extra post work for myself), so I instead focused on taking shots that utilized light near the doorways and windows to the outside, but most of my favorites were shot outside of the building. In the future I'd like to return with a model and an off camera flash and get some shots that utilize more of the location in addition to a model.
Photographed using a Canon 5D MKIII, Canon EF 135mm f/2.8 Softfocus lens (with the softfocus setting disabled), and lit using available light and a reflector.
It's certainly not my favorite shot from the day, but I do have at least one photo that I like which shows more of the location itself from the inside. The lighting inside this structure was really tough to use, hence why I'd like to return with a flash.
I also took this really corny picture of Caleb and Ahna, who also happen to be a couple.
Solid images Daniel. I love the first one. The last image is brilliant, even if ironically—one can trace a perfect heart around the couple. By the way, Caleb seems to be a natural, which is a tribute to your skill.
Nice set. First is my favorite... Love the colors, love the exposure. It feels gritty, which I like. I'm immediately drawn to his eye as the subject, which I'm sure is what you were going for.
Green cast and I are not friends either. Somehow I have a hunch that the green cast might have an enhancing effect on Caleb's eye color. Either that or maybe you're better at correcting that in post than you give yourself credit for. Those are my suspicions, and either way they are good things. Or I could be completely wrong lol

Thanks Derek. I never noticed the heart in the last photo until you pointed it out.

I'm sure it's something I might be able to use to my advantage if the need ever arises, but for the most part I avoid color cast light because I'd rather not have to take the time to correct it in post. The irony here being that regardless I still spend a significant amount of time in post specifically for color toning my portraits.
