I do my B&W conversions using the Photoshop Black and White layer. Modifications to layers below and above that B&W conversion layer are often considerable, including: global and local contrast, curves and contrast masks, texture, brightness, dodging and burning, selenium toning, etc.

Thanks! The original color version I thought was okay, but converting to B&W allowed me much more flexibility in my interpretation of the scene.
