p.1 #1 · How to photograph lunar eclipse

There will be a lunar eclipse this friday. I've never photographed an eclipse before. What are some strategies?

Interesting. There's an eclipse in California on Sunday, May 15th. Regardless, you might check here and here.

Sorry I posted the wrong day. The question of technique remains.

You'll have totality at around 11:30 which isn't great for including other elements unless they're up a hill. In totality, the moon's luminance is pretty low. I shot it at 300mm f5.6, 1600 ISO, 1 second, and had a usable file. A longer lens will need a faster shutter speed and a higher ISO. Fortunately, totality lasts a while so try different settings until you get something you like.

PhotoPills also has some good information. Out here in Hawaii the sun will have set shortly before the moon rises. And the moon will be near it’s max magnitude at that time. So if the weather cooperates we have a chance for some nice images.
