Today was my first outing with the 800mm PF. I wish I had a chance to chase Great Gray Owls like @DGettisNC was able to do. His images definitely demonstrate the amazing capabilities of the lens.
It was a typical MN winter morning... cold (20 deg), snowy, and gray to white. I wanted a sure thing to test out the lens, so I went to "my" swan spot. While I did not produce any Earth-shattering pieces of art, I can safely say that the 800PF is a keeper
Now I am faced with a decision about my other lenses... I can't afford to keep both my 100-400S and 400 f4.5. While the 100-400 is super flexible and fills a gap that follows my 24-120S, I love the rendering and weight of the 400 f4.5...
anyway, good shooting and stay warm.

Well done, Bruce. Congratulations on you getting the 800 PF which is great news considering the issues you are both facing.

Thanks Lance... Deciding to spend $6500 was a huge decision that I did not take lightly. My recent investment in gear is with the recognition that I am retiring at the end of the school year and will not have the disposable income to splurge on "things" if I hope to travel in the future. I am hoping that my current kit will meet my needs as I dive deeper into my passion for telling stories about nature through both pictures and words.

Congrats with receiving your lens Bruce!
I am currently 6th on the pre-order list, 9 months aftet ordering, but expect to get it in about 6 months
Chris, I hope you get your lens sooner than later. I was out shooting today at -1deg F (-18 C for you in the Netherlands), and was able to comfortably do some handheld photography... crazy when you realize that this is an 800mm lens!
I could be wrong, but I believe that the introduction of the 600mm f4S broke a bit of the "logjam." It is possible that some people canceled their 800PF orders to pre-order the 600 f4S. I am pretty sure that this expedited my acquisition. I actually think that I am very lucky to have received mine when I did. I have a very good relationship with my local pro store, and I believe that the sales manager at the store dropped my name to Nikon USA when they were doing a promo-event in Minneapolis.
I have done a number of workshops (short and long) for the shop, and they shared my recent calendar with the Nikon Rep who was at the store... I'm not sure if any of this helped, but 8 days later... Nikon called me.

Thanks George...
I am enjoying the lens, and will have to "love" it, as there is no way I can afford a 400mm f2.8S or 600mm f4S
At this point, I think that I will be selling my 100-400S at a bargain price and maintain an 800PF, 400 f4.5S, and 24-120S system of lenses. I think I can fit all three and my two bodies in my F-stop Tilopa... this will allow me to hike and shoot at will.

It was -1 deg F (-18 deg C) when I was out shooting today.
This young buck gave me a brief look, and I rattled off a few handheld shots at a relatively low shutter speed. It is amazing that one can shoot this lens without a tripod!
regards,
bruce
