I have a guy coming in today for a headshot, an artist here in Chicago who gets his headshots taken relatively frequently especially more in Chicago. He said something curious to me as he thought about who to take his picture, and that was: "I just kept coming back to your picture."
It was an interesting thought. For artists, I'll take the standard shot with relatively even lighting, but once we have that, it's time to have fun and get creative. I'll experiment with my lighting, and really work the shadows to come up with a piece that is unique and is sure to catch the attention of anyone looking at, compared how normal headshots look.
Here are some samples of my headshots, starting with the one of the guy coming in today.
4. I didn't go heavy on the shadows here as his whole face was interesting to me. He actually was at a photo shoot of mine, I think a magazine cover shoot, with a friend of his that I was photographing. I just asked if I could take his picture. It's one of my favorite headshots. http://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51938368604_91ac9927c3_b.jpg
Great job Ron. Nice use of an overhead softbox? and kicker on #2. Gives the rt side of the subjects head and shoulders great separation. All are very well done.

Thanks! Yeah, sometimes use overhead light. Once we go artistic, kinda fun as i never really know what I'm going to do. I just start playing around.

Thanks so much, Dan! These can be really fun if you get to play with shadows. Not everyone likes them, tho.
Boy do I know that Ron! But in the end it is all about what YOU, and possibly your client, like!
The lighting, to me, is excellent! No hot spots, no light flaring, no unflattering shadows.....
