Mathphotographer!! I love this guy.

Looks like mildly improved AF performance on previous XCD lenses, at least from the 35-75 he showed.

The force is strong with this one!
Even though I've liked the industrial design from the start with the X1D, I was never really tempted. But that sure changed with the X2D and those beautiful lenses. I can't really justify the price tag though. But as someone else said - the dreams of one body one lens is coming back in force.

I've never really come to terms with the 100s, I much prefer the original 50s in terms of handling. If I sold my 100s and four lenses I could probably fund the X2D, but no lens to put on it. It really doesn't make any sense. At all. Still the thought of it is hard to shake!

Tested the X2D and the 2 new lenses at a local store in Tokyo. Everything you need to know is covered in matt's review, but just a few points...

1. I think the new grip may even be better than the original X1D. Can't say for certain as I sold mine a few months back,

2. AF has improved A LOT. I'd say it's about the same speed as my Q2 in single point focus.

3. The new lenses are absolutely incredible. They are virtually silent and smooth when focusing, without even a hint of vibration unlike the old XCD lenses. These lenses are a must buy for this system imo. They are built better than anything I've ever come across. They make the GFX lenses feel archaic in comparison.

Once they release a firmware to support AF-C and eye-AF, the X2D will be the best photographic tool on the market imo. Bummer that they probably aren't going to release a 50MP version. I tested the GFX100S for a few weeks and I just can't deal with 200MB files.

But man... those lenses are epic.

So... I can probably afford the X2D + 45P + 55 if I sell my Q2 and gear collecting dust on my cabinet like the M9-P + a couple of M lenses + a few unused Sony lenses. I'll probably have to pick up a X100V as a temporary replacement for my Q2 as a walkaround camera, or maybe get a small pancake lens for my A7C.

Hard decisions will have to be made, even though I have 0% need for this new camera

This is kind of what I'm doing to an extent.. Over the years I've primarily developed 3 sets of kit that I need..

  1. - Highest image quality, no compromises.. Landscape, controlled / formal portraiture, personal projects

  2. - Family / Video / Functional - Kids sports, family vacations, family gatherings, documenting trips or other events

  3. - "Pocket" camera.. quick grab, small, fast, can focus close up for detail, use in low light (restaurants, etc..) travel-friendly. The camera for when I don't know if I'll even use a camera.

Over the past year this has kind of been the setup..

  1. 907x / X1D II - 35-75, 45P, 65, 90

  2. Leica SL2-S / M-10 - 35/50/75 Summiluxes

  3. Q2 / Fuji X-T4 with kit zoom

I've sold off the Q2 (will definitely buy the Q3 next year when it's out) and the cameras on Kit #2. I'm renting an A7c and A7IV and a bunch of tiny lenses to see where they fit in.. I bought the new techart Leica adapter for use with the M lenses, so could end up with an a7IV in slot #2 with some M lenses and maybe a 70-200 for sports, and then a7C for #3 with a tiny lens.. or just keep the fuji, build out the kit a bit to promote it to kit #2, then pick up something like a GR IIIx for #3 to hold me over until Q3 arrives.

I had planned on selling the 907x to complete the funding for the X2D + lenses (actually just withdrew it from B&S yesterday), but am rethinking that now, and I may just part ways with the X1DII.. I feel like the X1D II may not see much use with an X2D around, and at least the 907x offers something unique and even "portable" with a 45P.. Curious to see how it looks / works with the 38 XCDV..

Yeah once you get the X2D the X1D will likely become redundant as a backup, seeing that you also have a 907x to shoot 50MP files.

I have a A7C for casual video, and a pair of A1's that currently sits in your definition of kit #1 and #2. I think I'm done with Leica M cameras because my eyes can no longer cope with focusing rangefinders. I was getting ready to sell the Q2 even before the X2D announcement as I'd prefer something a bit smaller and lighter as a walkaround camera. There are only a couple cameras (X100V and GR III) that meet the criteria of being smaller than the Q but with good enough IQ to clearly differentiate itself from the top smartphones on the market. (technically there's also the RX1ii but ...)

Anyway, it's been a while (3+ years) since GAS has hit me this hard. I should have never stopped by the camera store

Haha.. I know how that goes.

I was tempted by the A1 as well, but it's too much of an in-between for me.. Not quite at X1D II levels for IQ, and is too much camera for just some soccer and kids stuff.

I had the x100v for a while, I just didn't gel with it. I couldn't get over it feeling cheap and it just wasn't special in any way or inspiring to me. The Q2 was much better in that regard, and the GR III(x) is just so small and tiny and, while plasticky, is still rather dense and solid.

Maybe I'll give the x100 series another shot whenever they drop in the new 42 mp sensor. For now, the X-T4 and XF 18mm f/2 is a pretty tiny and capable package.. and even when I swap in the kit 18-55 it's still very portable.

Curious to see how the a7c and a7IV perform against each other. I think the a7c AF is supposed to be the next-gen after the A7 III.. and obviously A7 IV is even newer. Rentals should be in on Tuesday..

An option for a compact camera could be the Sony RX1. While it is a decade old, I still decided to pick it up recently in mint condition. I used the RX1R when it came out and was stunned back then at the IQ and even today I feel it is one of the best compacts.

I have to say that Zeiss lens design + Sony sensor is magic and the output very competitive with my Q2. I also got the evf for situations that need it. While the RX1 is a bit slippery to hold, it is not terrible ergonomics, the size is truly pocketable I and can't argue with the results.

Agree with you on the new XCD lenses. I tried the 55mm and it is so light and fast focusing, so I ordered it asap!

This is a beautiful upgrade, but a camera probably nobody in this forum needs. Certainly, not me. I'm very happy with my Leica M11 (60 mpx) and Leica SL2 (50 mpx).

Nice, why'd you choose the 55 over the 38? I could only afford one right and still undecided.

The 38 is too wide me, though with cropping on the 100mp, it can be a versatile lens.

The 55 would be a sweet spot for most of my travel photography. I also have the 65 which is very very nice but I find it heavy. I am just surprised at how light the 55 is and if it wasn't this light, I would not have ordered it.

I think Hasselblad nailed it here with truly next generation lenses, keeping the weight and size under control.

Hopefully there's a lot more to the upgrade than just resolution.

The new sensor brings other benefits other than more pixels, plus the upgrades to the EVF, rear screen and memory. Athough I do find that I rarely thought of shooting XPan format on my X1DII or 907x but do occasionally on my GFX100S. I've been having some fun shooting square with the flip screen on the 907x. Kind of an old school waist level vibe. Can't do that on the X1D bodies. Won't have to make a decision as to which to take out.

I've been working along the same lines. A super high IQ kit and then something more general and a compact. For me it's been:

1. GFX100S (23, 32-64,80 and 100-200)
2. X1DII, 907x, (w' 45P and 90) M11 or M10M (w' CV28, 50 and 90 Summicron APO's)
3. RX1R.

I keep most of the lenses for each system but this is my *daily* carry. I probably have another 10% for exotic things where I'll use specialty gear. And after 5 years off I'm thinking of shooting a bit more commercially. I would like to exercise the brain abit more and shooting is a good way to do it. My studio needs a clean but is still basically complete.

The main casualty in this has been my SL2. Love the camera and lenses but it's not really fit in anywhere. However none of the above do super wide or super long so it has a home, for now. Plus my Leica Godox trigger is due which makes it a bit easier to integrate into my work (if I work). I've been using my S1R with a 43 trigger. It's be nice to use the SL2 for headshots with the Summicrons. I do have the Q2 but it's my Sl 28mm more than a compact camera. 28 isn't a focal length I prefer and the camera is bigger than the Rx1R I have. If they made it with a 50 that would change.

I'll still have a use for the GFX.It has more zooms and a better set up for adapting my Canon TS glass. I'm thinking though I'll pair down the kit as the X2D lenses are released. It'll depend a lot on how the AF and IBIS compare. Hopefully testing starts later today.

Another interesting camera is the new XH2, who's sensor may flow to a new XPro2 or XT5. I held on to my XT4 and XF lenses due to having the GFX. If the X2D is as good as I hope I'll have 4 categories but more than 4 options.

Work: X2D, GFX, SL2
Travel and landscapes: X2D or GFX (XH2/SL2 if I need a super tele or super wide)
Daily Use Kit: M11, M10M or XH2
pocket: RX1R

A lot depends on improvements with the older XCD glass. I have all of it. So it's a big upgrade path. I hope it's just a bit more usable, especially the 80mm. It doesn't need to be A1 levels for me. I have no use for that. Just enough for me to make it usable for candid casual shooting.

Hopefully we'll see later today. I have 4 batteries charged and ready to go.........
