p.1 #1 · Would you buy aCanon RP with 150,000 shutter clicks?
In the local classifieds, I found a RP at a very low price but with 150000 shutter clicks. I've heard of Canon DSLR's like the 6d's and 5d's easily exceed the 'shutter rating' that Canon puts out.
Would it be risky to buy a RP with this high of a shutter count?

Yes. Will a higher probability of failure be acceptable to you, such as a special project where the camera is expendible?

Besides the right price, I would say that the number of shots I intend to use it for would be almost as important. If I expected to capture say 5000/year, yes, for the right price. But if 100k, no, unless a failure would not impact the end result.

I'd try to determine the cost of replacing the shutter (e.g. ask here, ask Canon, ...), and then deduct that cost from the typical price for a used RP (about $800 US on eBay). So, if the shutter replacement costs about $300 US, then I'd pay about $500 US max for the camera. I'd lower the price a bit further if it had none or only a few of the original come-with components, and I'd adjust the price upwards if there were nice extras. I'd further adjust the price up or down if the camera was (otherwise) in 'like new' condition, or kind of beat up.

Thanks for the replies. I'll answer the main questions you guys asked here:
Cost of the RP:
It's around $600 Canadian. (so est. $475 US)
My use case:
It would be my secondary body next to my 5D4. I'll most likely put close to 5000 shutter clicks a year. So it won't be my heavy use body. It'll be more used for shooting landscape and just city shots while I just walk around.

Doesn't seem like a smart buy to me. Buyer is offering 50% or so off the new price for a body that is 80-90% used up but is primed to fail at any moment. Plus with the rumors of an RP replacement likely but the end of Q2, there is extra unknown depreciation to be eaten. Hard pass I say.

Appreciate the advice. Yeah I'm most likely going to pass.

I'd be pretty hesitant because I expect about 175k or so out of 30D etc. How long is the RP going to last vs older x0D series. I know Canada is different what are your other options? RP + 24-105 stm as low as $1k refurb in USA so that doesn't sound too good to me. maybe get 6D or something? Idk maybe offer $300 or something but that might tick them off. How hard has it been used otherwise? Is it beat up

FWIW, shutter replacement is usually a few hundred dollars. I wore one out of my 40D, and I think it was less than $300 to fix. With inflation it would be more today. But the camera is good as new afterwards. So while its a pain to send it out etc, a shutter repair is not a world ender. Shutters are also capable of lasing much longer than the rating in some cases too.
Still, in this case the price seems to be too steep given the confluence of circumstances. You're probably making the right decision to pass.

When I bought my first 1Dx it had 180k and the price was $1700 which was VERY cheap at the time.
I called Canon and they said replacing the shutter would cost $350. So I bought it with confidence since even if the shutter went out the next day it was still cheap because going rate was $2500+ if you could find one at the time!
That was my strategy.

Hagle with him and tell him all of the comment posted here you never know you could get it for 450$ just take your time for the negotiation if you are not in hurry .

I thought the RP didn't have a mechanical shutter? I know it doesn't have a sensor cover, and no highly complex mirror like on a DSLR. What's really left to mechanically go wrong?
That said, RPs are so cheap now, I'm not sure I'd take a gamble.

Unless the owner has been doing mostly long time lapse photography indoors on a tripod to reach 150,000, that is a lot of clicks. The battery is probably close to death, if used often the articulated screen has its wear limits, the sockets for USB-C may have seen a lot of use that can impact internal circuitry, etc.. While my RPs are doing well after almost 3 years, they are not built like tanks, so the risks may go beyond just replacing the shutter.
