p.4 #1 · 8 reasons why I love the M11 compared to the M10

Ok, I'm biased because I loved every M camera I owned, digital or film except maybe for the M8.
And each time, I'm thinking I will keep the own I have and not buy the new one but resistance to GAS is futile.

Anyhow, compared to my original M10, here are the things I like:

- USB-C. This is great. I was at the hotel and wanted to transfer pictures to the MacBook Pro. I removed the USB-C cable from the charger, connected it to the M11 and transferred the image. I then removed the cable from the MacPro, connected this end

Thanks for the report. How's the smartphone connectivity? Is it stable? I've read it's pretty good (it has to be better than what Sony and Nikon are offering).

Perfectly usable. I do not use it a lot but I have an anecdote: I was visiting Zagreb, Croatia (nice city & country btw) and shot a few pictures.
Then my son calls and asks how it is. I connected the M11 to my phone, transferred a few pictures wirelessly and sent them to him by text (or email, do not remember).
It took me 2 minutes, everything worked flawlessly. I've used it several times since and the experience has been the same.

But I prefer not to look at my pictures after shooting them for a while so I usually transfer them a few days later with an USB-C cable.

It's a big win for the M11 in regards to smartphone connectivity and transferring. It's super fast compared to the M10-R. The latter takes 33 seconds to create a WIFI connection whereas the M11 only takes a couple seconds.

Thanks @pmeheut and @Fred Miranda. That is encouraging. For a company better known for its mechanical and optical prowess, it's impressive to see that Leica can build more usable connectivity infrastructure than the vaunted tech giants like Nikon or Sony.

Looks like the m11 price on the boards is coming down. I keep telling myself, "I love my m10-R." and I intend on keeping it, but as the m11 gets closer to the m10-R price, I wonder how long I can hold out.

There is no reason to switch unless you want it and have the money.

So far you are absolutely right.
I have all the ND filters and everything I need for use. I never use my Visoflex, pretty much always just the rangefinder. I don't really care about the wireless connection. Plus, I don't like trying to sell bodies

When using my M10 for street photography, I would just turn off sleep completely. The camera would go through batteries quicker but be available instantaneously to take a shot (just like a film camera).

If you want to be able to take a picture at a moments notice, just turn off sleep/standby entirely.

This is excellent advice for the street photographer. I also turn off Auto Review to partly compensate for the additional battery usage and carry two spare batteries.

Agree! Great tip, especially for the new M11 which closes the shutter when going to standby and has to re-open when coming back. (more delay and shutter usage)

I could never figure out why the M10 takes so long to activate Wi-Fi. It's almost shameful, for the cost of Leica products, no?

They certain addressed it on the M11, but I wish the Leica Photos functionality on the M11 would also just show me the damned password, for manual entry into my phone's Wi-Fi connections. As the M10 would...

No thanks.

I prefer charging my cameras without risking damage to their mainboards.

Interesting discussion, but its hard to see how the M11 could be better than the M10M - which is close to perfect.

You must confuse USB-C with coal or something.
Did you know that a lot of people charge a lot of things daily using USB? And they do not damage them? Their smartphone for instance?

You should consider leaving the 19th century and embrace the 20th. We'll talk about the 21th later, when you are ready, in a few decades.

I definitely wouldn't say it's better than the M10*M* since the M10M high-ISO and overall tonality is incomparable. M10M and M11 would be a nice combo, even with the mismatched batteries.

That said, the b&w conversions from the M11 are very, very good. B&w conversions from the M11 have nearly the same tonality as conversions from the GFX 100S. Can't get much better than those two cameras if you prefer converting from color.

I think one of the big advantages to a monochrome camera is the commitment to B&W from the get go. Like putting a roll of B&W film in 35mm camera. You are fully committed to that process.

The M11-M will be here soon enough:

Agree. And also limited to the color filtration done at the time of capture. It's about as close as you can get to a b&w film experience – though I do wish Leica would produce an M11M-D without the rear screen alongside the expected M11-D.

I've never tried the M10-M but from what I've read it has much lower 'read noise' (perhaps 1 or 2 stops than cameras using with a color filter array).
But what about highlight recovery? How does it compare to the M10-R for example?
