Where do I start ...

In short: The camera works. It's mono converted. The sensor has a defect I can't unsee. The body shows corrosion on the inside. It has 23k clicks.

The long: I wanted to save money by buying a Sony and having it mono converted. What could possibly go wrong? The camera came from mpb in "good" condition, and I could not disagree, so I sent it out for the conversion. God bless the vendor for immediately informing me that the inside of the body was corroded, badly. Most likely from the previous user dropping it in salt water. You can't see it externally, and since the electronics were not impacted I asked the vendor to proceed with the conversion process, knowing that this was a risk.

Upon taking delivery of the converted camera, I noticed a large defect on the sensor which I have tried to highlight in the top left of Picture 5. There are two smaller defects that are not dust, and the clone tool can take care of them. The rest of the defects are just dust which are inherently tricky on a mono converted sensor, and the clone tool can deal with those as well. But the large defect gets tricky with the clone tool.

I am trying to cut my losses and move on to an M246 or an M10M. My expensive lesson could be your gain.

If you have read so far, I can only assume that you know that the inside of the body shows corrosion, but I wanted to state it again: The inside of the body is corroded. I will try to open the body to take some better pictures of the corrosion level, but you should just assume the worst. That aside, the camera works just as fine as my primary A7R3 body.

I realize that the price will be very subjective, so here is a starting point. I will not be insulted by lowball offers. You will get a response. Heck, I'll even chuckle at whatever jokes you throw at me, though I recommend you post them in this thread, so we can all laugh. If you want to try it out and are willing to travel to Santa Barbara, you are welcome to do so.

Included are the body, front cap, and one battery. Price includes shipping and Paypal fees. Let me know if you want more details, but please allow ~24 hours for responses.

Edit: PDAF no longer works after the mono conversion.

If you have any other concerns, just reach out, I am open to discuss anything without getting annoyed or offended.

You must be sodium frustrated with MPB. They sell you a camera that shore seems like a good deal. It gets sent off for conversion and the vendor says "there's a problem." and you're like "water you mean?" Then to add in-salt to the situation, it comes back with flaws. But I do admire your tonality throughout this apparent alkaline process.

Yeah, that's the content I crave.

To be fair, I didn't see the issue myself, so it's hard to blame MPB. I am as much at fault as MPB as I could have returned it when the vendor noticed the issue.

I am a little saltier with the vendor about the sensor defect, but I won't hold a grudge and will instead move on emotionally and physically. The lost $ stings, but I would rather lose $ than my credibility as regaining my credibility will take at least $$ and lots of time. In the long term, a one-time loss of $ is not the end of the world. After a decade of buying used gear, I was bound to get screwed once.

100% speculation (I wished this camera could talk), but on the part I inspected, the corrosion is confined to the outer-most layer. So perhaps it was a just a quick dip in the ocean, enough to reach the body but not the electronics. If this was followed by a prolonged dry-out period with the body just sitting in its natural position, it would explain why most of the corrosion is at the bottom of the body. In the second-to-last and third-to-last picture you can see metallic components just a little further into the body which show zero signs of corrosion.

Beware though, I only opened a small part of the body, and perhaps it is worse in other parts. But the battery compartment, SD slot, and electronic connectors on the side of the camera look brand new.

Do you have anything that can plug into the MI hotshoe, such as a Sony flash or mic? Coming from experience, that is usually the first thing to go when corrosion starts.

One of the best accurate listings I have seen. Good Luck with your sale. Curious, what is the advantage of monochrome conversion?

Many thanks.

On a typical color camera, each pixel only captures either red, or blue, or green. The raw processor then interpolates the RGB value of each pixel using the color info of neighboring pixels and an algorithm. The algorithm is not as good as the real world. Imagine a mostly red subject, the blue and green pixels won't really be contributing a whole lot of information and so the red subject will be sampled at a lower resolution.

I first started out with mono when I was doing astro photography. Lots of nebula emit at 656.3 nm, so the green and blue pixels are just idling around. A mono sensor keeps all pixels busy with data.

My next experience with mono came on a mountaineering expedition seminar around Denali base camp. Most scenes are white/blue and you are wearing glacier glasses with a strong orange filter, so the world looks mono anyway. These were converted from color images, which gives you more freedom than a mono camera.

I am planning on going back to Denali in 2023, and I wanted to have a mono camera for that trip. And since I have fantastic glass for my primary Sony (including several Leica R lenses that would be silly to adapt to an M body), I figured getting the Sony converted was cheaper than buying a Leica M mono. I was wrong.

Edit: The three images in this post did not come from the camera being listed for sale.

I think I recall hearing Roger at Lens Rental say the weak weatherproofing of this camera is the base assembly. So the corrosion more likely came from setting the camera down in a puddle. Friends I know who have flooded cameras underwater had most of the damage through the battery compartment.

Price drop, and I have removed the 1 year warranty, but you'll have a 1 month inspection period.
