Does anyone know if the Z7 can AF-C past f8? That would be something that kills using a 2x/100-400 on the Z7…Sony had this Issue until the A7R4.
Yes it will. I believe all the Z Bodies will. I've even used a Z50 with a 500PF & 2XTC @ F11.

Hey Patrick,
Glad it helps.
I do not have a Z7 and recently sold my Z7II, but I do have a Z6II.
I also have a 300PF, so I have an opinion before even testing this. The 300PF is an awesome lens that produces some superb images, but.... It is slow - very slow AF compared to many of my other lenses. I have used it with a 2x on several Z bodies and am familiar with your experience.
The 100-400S lens is in an entirely different league than the 300PF when it comes to AF speed. The difference is large. I suspect you are in for a very pleasant surprise. I'll give it a try one my Z6II & let you know.
The obvious difference is light. The 300PF w/2x (wide open) is F8. The 100-400 w/2x (wide open @ max FL) is F11. ...Show more →
Thanks Phil! Yes, of course I am aware of the F11 issue and would expect to use the 2x in good light. I did try my 200-500 with the 2x on my Z7 and that worked for sitting birds even with mediocre light. I am very much leaning towards getting the Z 2x first and the 1.4 later. Looking forward to your experience with the Z6 II and the 100-400 2x combo.

In need of some phototherapy in spite of the dismal, murky, and drizzly weather here in Pennsylvania I resorted to using flash. This is a great lens even on the Z7ii.

Looks good Mike, you found some color. I'm next door to you in equally dreary Ohio right now.

Hi Neighbor, I don’t mind when it’s overcast as I can shoot at my setup all day, if it’s sunny I have to quit after about 10am. When it’s murky like today I use a remote SB-8000 and that brightens things up nicely. Today I was mostly using manual flash at 1/16th and 1/32nd power.

First day out with the Z9 and the 100-400mm and 1.4 TC on a bright sunny day in Florida when this pair of eagles locked resulting in 45 images as they spun to the lake below. Shot from a pontoon boat. Also all images are of the same quality with a tough almost noontime exposure.

Another eagle about 10 minutes before sunset. In the brightest of light and then the low light as the sunset this autofocus never skipped a beat even with the 1.4tc on it. Another 40 plus image sequence on my first day put. So far really enjoying the Z9 and this lens combo.
