Wow, beautiful shot!
The background looks really good with this lens.
Thanks cvrle59...
I did shoot this wide open with the Z6II. Eight of ten were sharp, but most had other birds in distracting places.
The background is at quite a distance... maybe 200 meters, but the quality of the out of focus areas is actually quite nice. This can easily be seen in the swans that are paddling behind the flyer.

You've been shooting with 500PF for some time, how does 100-400s compare to it, beside FL difference?

I can't say anything about image quality differences yet, as I've not had the lens long enough or shot in diverse conditions yet. However, I've been using the 100-400 on my Z6II and 500PF on Z7II. I've been shooting them side-by-side to meet a variety of focal length needs. At this point, I feel like the 100-400 locks onto the target faster than the 500mm lens, and maintains focus on a moving target better. If we assume that the continuous AF performance of the Z6II and Z7II are identical, then this suggests that the native Z lenses are more responsive than the F-mount lenses. This should not come as a surprise, as Z-lenses were designed and programmed to work only with Z-cameras, while the F-mount lenses were designed and programmed with work with F-mount DSLRs.

If I understood what you said, you can manual focus the lens while the whole setup is in AF mode. This is useful to focus when th camera hunts or focus on unwanted foreground or background. You should be able to manually focus wherever you want and shoot. This is how the F mount lenses and DSLRs work. As soon as you take ur hand off the focus ring and half press shutter button/back focus button, camera will start autofocusing again. Is this the behavior you are seeing? If so, great. Thanks

I still didn't get my 100-400s, so I can't comment it, but I played with z5/24-200 as I was reading this thread.
My answer here is, if camera is in af-s mode, you can prefocus either with af-on or half pressed shutter button, then override it with focus ring.
As soon as you start using MF, the focus scale will show up in the EVF, focus peak too, and focus square will turn green if it aims to the point being in focus.
This works with 14-30mm as well.
Don't forget, MF on Z-mount lenses is by wire, not mechanical like F-mount.
P.S. 14-30 is got M-A switch, it's in A, but 24-200 doesn't have any, it's in A by I-menu. ...Show more →

I'm not sure if it's just FW issue. I think it's a lens's physical feature. If the l na doesn't support it may not able to achieve in camera. I could be wrong.
Sony 100-400 and 200-600 have this 'issue'. You cannot manually focus while you actively focusing in AF mode. I think there's a button hold and rotate feature, but it's not easy as simply rotating focus ring.

At the moment, my understanding is that Z mount lenses only have M and A mode and no M/A mode like in Nikon DSLR.
I asked my dealer about this and I was told that Nikon plans to add manual override option into the body sometimes in the future as there is no A/M button on the lens. Supposedly there will already be first firmware update before the end of the year and several more planned for the next few months so we can expect more features for Z9. Don't know if this will apply to other Z bodies though.
I have not look through the manual yet but scrolling through the menu quickly, I don't see any option for manual overide yet. So at the moment, in A mode, when I use manual focus ring , when I press shutter button, AF will activate and it will focus back to wherever focus point is pointed to.

Yes, it does work like that as well on 100-400. As long as the focus box is in focus, you can shoot. But if you use
manual focus to defocus the picture and if the area under focus box is not in focus, AF will activate when you press
shutter button.
Not really sure if I am answering the right question. I don't really use manual override much. Basically either I use a manual focus ring with MF ring or sometimes I use manual ring to move focus when AF is stuck in limbo just to help nudge AF a bit to move to the right direction. If this is the case then 100-400 has it
I think that's the problem. As soon as you press shutter button, it will go back to AF and focus again. So your manual focus doesn't work actually. It can be used to give camera an initial focus point so that it can focus somewhere closer to where you manually focused. This feature also is useful as MILC struggle to find something close by when it's focused far away. It's another topic to explain

The lens is in A mode, if there is a switch on it, and camera is in AF-S mode.
If AF is not activate, you can turn the ring, and you will change focus manually,
but you won't have any indication except image on EVF or back screen.
If you press shutter button, camera will focus on whatver focus box points out, and your manual focus will be gone, image taken will show whatever camera focused on.
But, if you prefocus camera with half way shutter button activation, and you're holding it in that position, then you rotate manual focus ring, the scale will show up, the focus peak will show up, even the dot like DSLRs do in bottom left corrner with two brackets, the focus box will become green if it points to infocus subject.
If you press shutter button all the way from there, and you take a picture, your manual focus will be recorder wherever you stopped it, basically AF camera prefocus will be overridden.
I think, this is the same with DSLRs, except, no focus peaking coloration, and MF works mechanically, not by wire.
I hope this clears it..

Suteetat, do you use back-button focus?
Most of the time I just press shutter half way to acquire focus. I tried using AF-on button in the past but
have not really adapted to that just yet. I used AF-On sometimes especially when I look at
rear LCD rather when my eye is glued to EVF.

After manually focusing with the lens switch in the "A" position the camera will refocus if you have AF on the shutter button. However, if you use back-button AF instead, then the camera will not refocus after manually focusing.

It won’t refocus with a half press of the shutter button, which is how you’re supposed to use it to my knowledge. Acquire focus, hold halfway, adjust with MF ring.

Thanks for clarifying this. I think I understand how it works now. But there are couple of differences in DSLR/Lens combo
1. It can be done in AF-S or AF-C mode. Doesn't matter
2. You don't have to pre-focus or half press. Just start manually focusing and shoot. Camera will take the picture where you focused manually. There are times you don't have to change anything and may get a second or two for the shot.
Below bear was taken using D300 and 500/4 lens on tripod. She was behind bushes and looked at me couple of times like this and there was no way AF would've worked here
The owl shot is using A9+200-600. The owl was in nest I had enough time to change the lens to manual focus and and then focus and shoot. But if I were using A9 combo for bear shot I'd have missed it.. I don't claim neither shots are great..
Yes, you're right, very pleasing.
I'm waiting for call for mine, and I'm praying, it's as sharp as your second copy and some other once here.
The lens is absolute winner.
You sound happy with 24-120s, now with 100-400s as well, should we consider you as a new Nikonian, or you're still thinking...
