In the first grouping of settings to the left for the Viewfinder there is a setting for "battery save" or "Smooth". Under the "Smooth" setting there is now, since the update and additional check box below the "Smooth" and you can check or uncheck it to determine if it will mess with the frame rate. I keep it UN checked to avoid potential focus lock issues, which I DID run into just as the list of possible effects Canon showed were possible. Be on the safe side and leave it un checked.

I loaded a CAMSET saved from an R5 with 1.40 to a different R5 with 1.50 and the box was unchecked by default. I will leave it that way. Thanks.

So here's a test I did to see if the AF has become more "sticky". Unfortunately the gull's eye wasn't quite visible I will see if I can do a test where the eye is clearly visible as well. As you can see the camera really likes to grab focus on the background and with the new firmware it does stick longer but it's still not great. This is one area where Sony seems to have it figured out in the limited experience I've had with the A1. If I ever get my hands on an R3 I'll try a similar test to see if it does better.
This was Case Auto if I recall correctly but I've tried Case 1/2/4 with various more sticky tweaks but they all seem to behave similarly.
Goes without saying probably but there's no artistic or photographic merit to this image

I think I found it, pretty well buried in the menus. Looks like it is unchecked by default so I'm leaving it alone. Thanks

I'm starting to rethink the upgrade a bit. This afternoon, I experienced some pretty major focus failures in contrasty afternoon light with subjects which were largely side-lit. Hmm...

I upgraded one of my R5's to 1.5.0 and I've noticed some strange focus inconsistency with my RF 85 f/1.2L. With firmware 1.4.0, that lens and camera combination was deadly. For example, I could nail focus consistently of my dog running full tilt at f/1.2, and he has black fur and dark eyes.
Now I'm finding the camera's focusing to be very finicky; the focus square bounces around, and even when things should be in focus they aren't.
I'm going to have to try and compare the updated camera with my other R5 that I haven't updated the firmware on when I have time. I suspect I'll have more consistent and better results on the 1.4.0 firmware camera than what I'm getting now with the updated 1.5.0 camera.

I seem to be having similar issues. Can we roll back firmware?
Firmware Version 1.5.0 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.4.0. If the camera's firmware is already Version 1.5.0, it is not necessary to update the firmware
Firmware Version 1.2.0 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.1.1. If the camera's firmware is already Version 1.2.0, it is not necessary to update the firmware.
Once the EOS R5 is updated to Firmware Version 1.2.0 (or later), it cannot be restored to a previous firmware version (Version 1.0.0 to 1.1.1).

I tried the 1.5 firmware upgrade this morning. The angle of the light in relation to the birds wasn't so great so I shot only little bit to test the new focus functions. I only shot ~40 shots over the course of 40 minutes, and the camera had 3 reboots.
In the past, I would have maybe 1 reboot in 6 hours of solid shooting with my R5, so this increase in reboots was VERY disappointing. I wasn't using any 3rd party equipment (adapters, converters, batteries), so everything was canon.
I've never had a camera that reboots regularly. It's especially frustrating with an expensive camera. Needless to say, the birds heard a lot of cussing this morning.
I know my one experience doesn't paint a complete picture, but based on my experience today, I would urge caution to folks considering the firmware "upgrade". Missing shots while your camera reboots is worse than any shortcomings you may be experiencing now.

I just downloaded the 1.4 Firmware ( what mine had originally) before Canon pulls it from their site just in case I can indeed roll it back.

People on at other sites have rolled back. One called Canon about it and they said you can't. I'm not sure if that meant it can be done but we don't advise you do it. I've always found I got better information from Canon USA than Canada. Maybe someone in the US can call Canon and ask this question. Also if not then why?

I've seen images of that so yes people are rolling back. Just curios as to why Canon said no. Sometimes they have a script and it may be a older one.
There is some mention of doing it with the EOS utility, which I don't 'normally" use; but I downloaded & installed it, but the R5 input is USB C, & my PC has only USB3....WiFi hookup is cumbersome for a one-time check, so I ordered a USB C to 3 converter arriving tomorrow.
If you can connect your R5 to the EOS Utility, check out & see if the Firmware Update function allows roll-back.

Looks like a good way to brick your camera to me. No thanks!
Only one outing so far using 1.5.0 and the weather wasn't the greatest nor were my subject distances. I need to test further, but if the results I got with my R5 +500II + 1.4III a couple weeks ago turns out to be caused by this FW update then I'm going to be royally pissed. For now I'm writing it off as bad atmospheric conditions until I get another chance to shoot more in better conditions.
