p.3 #1 · Looks like R5 firmware v1.5.0 will be out any day [changelog posted]

I was out yesterday trying my R3. I came across a gentleman with an R5 who said he put on the update as soon as it came out and was very impressed with improved features of the auto focus system. He said his was quicker locking on to a bird and was stickier when locked on. I have upgraded my R5 today and will take it out tomorrow to give it a go. Interested in seeing how the ato focus compares now to the R3. I will report back tomorrow

I second the findings on the R5 autofocus improvement. Much snappier and even more accurate than with v1.4.0. I tried out the vehicle focus on airplanes at Chino Planes of Fame yesterday, and it worked amazingly well.

I shot a soccer game yesterday after the upgrade. I didn't take advantage of any new features/settings, just shot my normal custom settings for action/sport. All worked well, I can't say I noticed any big improvements.

A couple of amateur youtube videos pointing the cameras at cars on the freeway or at people. Not convincing but it's something for those who are considering the upgrade. FWIW, my earlier comments of the improvements noted, still stand.

Good to hear how vehicle is AF on planes. Look forward to spring airshows. On a Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter in vehicle focus today with my R5 and 800 f11 it locked on. Pretty cool how it worked.

Just updated my R6. I think that is the first time ever that I updated my camera's firmware, going all the way back to the 5D. I was quite nervous. I don't know why, but I thought it would go faster. When it sat a 0% for a few moments I nearly panicked!

Can't wait to try out the vehicle AF. I just messed with the viewfinder settings. My house is currently f/5 1/1000 at 25600ISO. I don't know if that qualifies as dark conditions or not, but I didn't see any difference between the frame rates when turning on the suppress frame rate option.

Any PDF manual yet? Old one on R5 support site although there is a web-version out.

Peace

Look forward to hearing your thoughts on the R3 v R5.

I updated my R5's FW yesterday before going out to shoot some surfers. It definitely acquires the subject a bit faster, but what was more noticeable was when it locked onto surfer it pretty much stayed locked on them. There was only a few times that it lost a surfer.

I have a bird book and the front cover has an owl on it. It’s not real but eye focus held on pretty good. I moved the camera around and got pretty aggressive. Sometimes it lost the eye, went to the body and then back to the eye when I slowed the camera movement.

We’ll see what the real world shows.

I updated my firmware on Friday, before doing several portrait shoots over the weekend. A big chunk of all my shoots was low keylight to ultra-low keylight color. I made a tad under 2,000 images.

For portraits with high keylight or moderate light, it seemed that eye lock-on was at least as good as before -- maybe a little better. When the lighting got dimmer, the camera went to head lock-on a lot. Not ideal, but it worked (even as I struggled to get it to lock on an eye).

But low keylight to ultra-low keylight? The camera doesn't see in the dark. Or even all that well in the dim. Sometimes, by itself, it wouldn't find the head or an eye that was clearly visible. After I directed the box to the target, it tended to stay locked on -- but it needed help for target acquisition. For me, I think 1.4.0 was better in the dark for portraits.

P.S. I have formatted my cards multiple times over the weekend -- no problems.

I shot to soccer games this weekend with the R5 and the new FW 1.5 - I'm going through the photos right now and I'd say I have more ouf-of-focus photos than before. It had a hard time to lock onto one particular goalie uniform (while the other was perfectly fine), and I had several instances when the focus ended up being more on the background than the situation I tried to acquire. I need to tweak the settings in tracking mode 4 a bit more to insure AF locks on and sticks, etc but for now, I cannot say that FW1.5 seems to have made any improvements.

Found out the hard way, do yourself a favor. The so called improvement of the "Smooth" view in the EVF when checking the box below it is NOT a good idea. It will often cause your focus to go haywire as well as slow focus acquisition with some lenses and in some light. Stay away from that adjustment. Stick with just the "Smooth" and leave that box unchecked. In my testing the eye auto focus even in lower light I'm finding it grabs the eye even quicker but most satisfying is it stays stuck on it like superglue. I'm loving that. So acquisition as I say is without a doubt quicker but so is the ability of once it's there to stay on it.

Wow, really helpful info. Maybe the AI AF was trying to open the book.

I don’t care if It isn’t helpful to you. Last thing I want to do. I’ve done a lot of indoor tests over the years that helped me better understand how the AF system and options work.

Don't know what you guys are doing, but mine is more accurate and AF is faster in the dark now (shooting stills)

I work sometimes taking pictures in a night club.
This Saturday I had many more out of focus pictures than usual in very low light using my Tamron 17-35. Before it was slower to focus but on point, now sometimes I get misfocused shots.

Then I’m having an issue with my original E6N battery (from Eos R). The camera is sometimes not recognising it as original and not working (the camera doesn’t work). With my E6NH no issues.

Last, not sure if it’s related but the metering is worse, the camera tends to overexpose with my sigma 85 in a shooting I did during daylight, and also in the night club I struggle more than usual to get the light right (flash and exposure compensation).

Can I go back to 1.4?

I can’t comment on the low light work but my R5 still works fine with unofficial batteries after the update

Mixed feelings here. I think the viewfinder is worse than before in low light unless I choose the new option. It stutters like crazy. I never had AF issues, so I really didn’t notice any difference there. Can you roll back firmware in Canon cameras? I think I want to go back to 1.4. EDIT: One more thing. Now, when powering on the camera, the AF point defaults to the far left center and I have to manually "re-center" it.. It never did that before.

I reported the other day on my findings that when that check box is checked under the "Smooth" on for the EVF setting it ham strings the focus in lower light and in my case I slapped on a RF24-240 lens and aimed at a shadow area in a room with fairly little light. At extension on the zoom beyond about 150mm it literally tried to focus then locked no longer trying. When I un checked the box it nailed focus immediately at all extensions including 240mm. I did notice when in my dim livingroom that when moving around to focus on a subject that indeed when the box was checked it didn't have that stuttering associated with the slowing of the processor processing the image to the EVF. As I confirmed that by unchecking it. But this is so very rare and not annoying that I'm leaving that box UN checked. I have no desire to ever run into hesitations or failure to focus which it DID when it was checked. Forget about it in my opinion nice try Canon but back to the drawing board. Or the processor in the R5 simply doesn't have the horsepower to deal with it properly.
